Monster Discussion / Seasonal Doll Displays
« on: June 11, 2018, 10:43:12 AM »
It's summer where I live. That means the warm weather dolls (swim class, Fright seers) are coming out of storage and the colder weather dolls (Epic Winter, maybe Gloom &Bloom, Scary Tales) are going to sleep until September.

I find that rotating them helps when I'm trying to avoid buying. Do you rotate dolls by season or at all? Or do you dress them for the seasons? Do you get the feeling that any of your dolls feel too hot/cold depending on outfit and time of year?

(I worry about how some dolls like Clawdeen and Cleo feel in cold, but don't think cold bothers other dolls like Abbey or Rochelle or Skelita or Robecca)

Monster Discussion / Your Unusual Doll Opinions
« on: March 12, 2018, 07:21:21 PM »
I've been hearing about gluehead for years, and only recently watched a video about what it is and how to get rid of it. "Wait a minute" I thought when I saw the doll they were working on, "that's what gluehead is?" Turns out that my DT Draculaura has gluehead. But the thing is, I've always loved the texture of her hair. It stayed in place and held dramatic styles really well. I've always wished more of my dolls had hair like her's. But apparently, most people really hate that kind of thing.

What are some of your not-so-popular doll opinions? Things/looks/characters/features you like that many people don't, things you don't like that most people seem to love, ect?

Monster Discussion / When Dolls Make You a Little Crazy
« on: February 07, 2018, 11:13:21 AM »
Finally managed to find a complete signature Ashlynn. I had no intention of buying hunter, but then I read her bookmark and her yearbook page and started feeling guilty, so I thought "I'll just look up her bio and put her with her friends!"

"Lots of people are my friends…Apple White, Raven Queen…but Hunter Huntsman is the only one who really understands me."

"Alright, alright, I'll find Hunter and bring him here!" I think I might have said it out loud (but I sure hope not) Then I spent an hour making her a fancy MirrorPad from cardboard, tin foil, gems, and paint chips so she could "talk" to Hunter until he got here.

Do your dolls ever make you feel crazy or do... things? Do you feel compelled to display them with their friends, or change their outfits if you feel that they dislike them, or find something to cover them up if you need to wash their hair and you don't want them to have to be nude? Any little customs like that or rituals that you feel compelled to carry out?

Please tell me I'm not alone... :drop:

Monster Discussion / Your Doll "Thank Goodness!" and "D'OH!" Moments
« on: January 29, 2018, 05:44:42 PM »
I'm looking on eBay right now for Ghoul Fair Howleen, and the prices are killing me. $18 for her loose without accessories, $39 for her NIB?!? How much is that dumb balloon worth?? And Fairest on Ice Duchess is nearing $50?!? And Signature Holly is $95?!?! Ohhh, if only I'd jumped on these things when they first came out. Doll D'OH Moments

Then as I'm looking, I see that Dragon Games Poppy is $75. I waited crouched like a tiger for that doll and sprang to Wal-Mart the day she was released to snag her, and I am so glad that I did. Same thing with Haunted Rochelle- I waited online at Wal-Mart and hit that "Add to Cart" button so dang fast... now she's pushing $50 loose, and I feel like I dodged a bullet with both of these ladies. Doll "Thank Goodness!" Moment

What are your dolly D'OH/Thank Goodness! Moments?

Monster Discussion / The Doll Unboxing Curve
« on: December 20, 2017, 04:28:16 PM »
I was anticipating the arrival of my Thronecoming Blondie, but hesitated to open her. I told myself I was going to "save unboxing her for a day when I really need a happiness boost", but as the days go by, I'm more reluctant to debox her. She's in good company though- I put off deboxing Black Carpet Operetta, BYBY Cleo, Clawdia, Viperine, Jane Boolittle... probably others.  Here's a visual representation:

What about you? Do you put off deboxing dolls? Do you find that this chart applies to you? How do you bring yourself to debox a doll that's gorgeous and possibly rare? Tell me everything. I love hearing your thoughts.

Monster Discussion / Doll Collector Stand-Up Comedy
« on: October 30, 2017, 05:59:17 PM »
Why the heck isn't there a stand-up comedian just for the doll collector community? I think it would be hilarious. They could joke about all sorts of things- box hair, head tags, Mattel, articulation, glue head, the mrketplace... they could be gimmick characters, like "Intern at Mattel" or "Doll Designer who designed (some line)" or "(Ghoul character) doll" so much material there.

Post a few jokes in a doll collector comedy routine, please. I don't care if you don't think your jokes are funny; someone will find them funny.

"I got Black Carpet Cleo today. ...Yeah. She came with a stand. Y'know. And a hairbrush. I know, thank god, right? That's just what I need, another hairbrush. Let's put that with the other seventy billion, right? What am I supposed to do with all these things? Use them as earrings? Melt them down and pave my driveway? ... I got some tack, wallpapered my bathroom with them? Great, used up about half my supply. ... You wanna know a cool trick for getting rid of all your doll hairbrushes? Watch this- get a doll, mess up her hair, and go "man, I really need to fix your hair" All your hairbrushes will disappear. Every single one. You won't see them for weeks. They hear that and scatter like cockroaches. "What's that? She needs a brush? Uh, sorry, man, I got this thing I need to be at, and uh- bye!"

"You wanna hear a funny joke? Reasonably priced HooDude Doll."

"Why do reboot Monster High dolls fail Speech class? 'Cause they lack articulation."

Monster Discussion / Your Doll "Deal-Breakers"
« on: October 05, 2017, 06:53:59 PM »
I really like the Gloom and Bloom line, and the only thing that's stopping me from collecting all of them is Jane. I would buy her, but that skirt of hers just does not work for me. I'd buy her if not for that skirt. It's just a deal-breaker.

Do you have a doll that you'd buy "if it wasn't for X"? How about a line/character set you'd complete if not for one doll that isn't to your taste? I love hearing from you, you're all so interesting. Tell me everything; don't be afraid to get rant-y, or even just outright complain. The collection habits of other doll collectors are relevant to my interests  ^.^

Monster Discussion / Need Ideas for Multiple Doll Collectors in One Home
« on: September 30, 2017, 08:47:57 AM »
My friend L.X and I are planning on moving into an apartment sometime in the future. We're both very avid doll collectors, so I realized that we might have a problem telling our dolls and doll clothes apart. Our collections are both so big that they will definitely be overspilling our rooms and we both have ideas about different setups (Freak du Chic, Mad Tea Party, water-themed corner, "Artist" setup, classroom setup). There's probably going to be a lot of clothes sharing, as we both have a lot of custom doll clothes. It's just that as time goes on, I know we're going to forget which things we came in with.

I'd be fine with the living situation never changing, but I'm pretty sure that L.X would like to find someone and get married eventually, so I'd like to ask the Arena if you have any ideas or experience with more than one collector living in a home.

Monster Discussion / What Do You Do With Your Doll Diaries?
« on: August 24, 2017, 05:13:07 AM »
I love the doll diaries, but I wish I had a better way to store them. Right now, I keep them in a plastic ziplock bag, but then I purchased an EAH diary lot of 29 and the bag just isn't going to cut it. Also, when I first started collecting, I'd put the diaries together, then misplace them, so sometimes I discover random clusters of diaries around my room. Anyone else do that?

How do you store your diaries? I have no idea, but I don't want to throw them out because I consider them works of art that give the dolls depth and soul beyond being just a piece of pretty plastic  (not that dolls without diaries are soul-less).

Monster Discussion / Silly Monster, What Are You Doing? That Won't Work!
« on: February 07, 2017, 04:15:20 PM »
I just saw the Toys R Us listing for Casketball Star Venus. It looks great and I love it, but at the same time, I was thinking "Silly Venus, how are you going to play Casketball wearing stiletto heels?"

What other "silly monster" things have you noticed from our favorite ghouls and mansters, either in doll form or in the webisodes?

Monster Discussion / Dolls You Aren't That Attached To
« on: February 04, 2017, 03:18:41 PM »
For some reason, I never really formed a "bond" with my Kjersti Trollson doll. I liked the idea of her when I ordered her, but I don't feel all that "attached" to her. I don't dislike her or anything like that, but if a little kid was staring at my doll collection and saying "I wish I had a doll", I could easily give Kjersti away and not feel the need to buy another one.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who has at least one doll like this?

Monster Discussion / What Doll are You Not "Over" Yet?
« on: January 09, 2017, 12:41:04 PM »
It's been a year since I purchased Haunted Rochelle and I'm still enthralled with her beauty. There are dolls that you sort of get used to having around, but for me the enchantment hasn't worn off on this doll. Every time I look at her it's like I've just de-boxed her. Do you have any dolls like that?

(It's the same story with my Dragon Games dolls)

Buy/Sell/Trades / Desperately Seeking Epic Winter Daring
« on: November 26, 2016, 05:45:06 PM »
I'm in desperate need of an Epic Winter Daring doll, nude or otherwise. I bought the slimbox Daring, but his head refuses to stay on the Dexter doll, and it's most distressing. PM me, name your price. I live in New York. Thank you in advance!

Monster Discussion / Conversations that Must have Happened at Mattel
« on: December 02, 2015, 05:19:51 AM »
In which we speculate things overheard at Monster High headquarters (wherever that is).

Designer: Ok, I designed Gloom and Bloom, Freak du Chic, Sweet Screams, and Scary Tales for you, but I'm going on vacation.
Boss #1: But what are we gonna do for designs?!
Designer: Not my problem; cya in a month.
Boss #1: Fine! We don't need them! We can come up with awesome doll designs on our own!
Boss #2: Exactly! How hard can it be? *Gets printer paper and a pencil* Let's see, well... it's gotta be cool
Boss #1: And scary. Scary cool.

[Five hours later, balls of crumpled paper all around, empty soda cans all over, ashtray full of cigarette butts]

Boss #1: What do we have so far?
Boss #2: Um... put glasses on Howleen and call it Geek Shriek...
Boss #1: Ok, ok, that's good, that's something.

[Two hours later]

Boss #2: I know! A sleepover Draculaura!
Boss #1: But we already have two-
Boss #2: We'll make her dress red. They'll never notice.
Boss #1: Yeah, but some people might-
Boss #2: Do you wanna go home tonight, or do you wanna be stuck here until 6 AM again?!
Boss #1: ... Make her hair streaks red, too, just to be safe.
Boss #2: Good, good.. see? We can be creative. They're not the only ones who can design cool dolls!

Monster Discussion / Stuff Monster High Collectors Say
« on: November 07, 2015, 06:55:47 AM »
Are you familiar with the popular "Stuff* ____ say" videos on Youtube? What are some things Monster High fans/collectors say?

"Ok, just let me buy her and then that's it for the month."

"Oh, your hair... we need to give you a spa day when I have time..."

"When are they going to  make you into a doll? I need you now!"

"*gasp* New leaked pictures?! Mineminemineminemine!"

"Seriously, this is the last doll this month. I don't have any room!"

"... $11.50? I know what I said, but this is an emergency! I'm never going to find her for that price again!"

*(It's actually "crap ___ say" but I don't want to offend anyone).

[language edit ~ hathorcat]

I just got the Mad Science Lab Partners 2-Pack (YAY!) Unfortunately, Cleo's right eye seems to have migrated up a fair bit, and Ghouliette has one eye a bit too small.

Also, and I don't know how to explain it... Cleo's hands seem completely wrong. They aren't the usual Monster High hands at all; they're all stiff and feel like they're made from a different plastic. Nevermind that- after looking at Amazin, it seems her hands are shaped that way so she can hold the bottles. #D'Oh

I've seen people here talk about contacting Mattel and getting replacements. Those of you that have been through that process, how long did it take? Did you contact them by phone or by email? Did you have to provide receipts?

I'd like to get them replaced, but I have no idea where to even start. I've never "complained" about a service before. Even when waiters have messed up my order, I don't say anything.

I hope other people here have little "customs" and such with their dolls. Never separating two dolls from one-another? Having one doll "prefer" to wear one outfit? Anything like that? Here are mine:

My MF Venus is always beside some kind of plant and always facing a window so she can see outside. I feel like it keeps her happy.

Before I put on an episode of The Walking Dead, I first have to give Ghoulia her dollie headphones and a comic book so she doesn't have to listen. Sometimes I find myself whispering "Don't listen, Ghoulia!"

Silly stuff, I know, but I figure if anyone else does that (or would say "I kinda get that..."), I'd find them here.

Monster Discussion / Head Canon (What's Yours?)
« on: April 03, 2014, 12:33:42 PM »
If you aren't familiar with the term, head canon means "ideas, beliefs or aspects of a character that don't correspond with information present in the canonical material." It can also be something relatively inconsequential that we aren't explicitly told in canon (Example: deciding that Rochelle Goyle makes extra pocket money by giving French tutoring after school).

What are your monster high headcanons? I'd love to hear what other people have made up, even if they differ vastly from everything in canon. Believe me, I'm excited to see everything and anything you have to say.

My own Headcanons:

~Draculaura's fainting at the smell of blood is an exaggerated disgust response. She does it because it annoys her deeply when others insist that her vegetarianism is "just a phase" and that she's "just being a silly, typical rebellious child who will eventually grow up". Her pet peeve is not being taken seriously (she's a vampire, and they're a vain people who take themselves extremely seriously). Secretly, the smell of fresh human blood does interest her, but she'd never admit it, not even to Count Fabulous.

~ Abbey and Rochelle hang out together on the rooftops. They've formed a close friendship up there. Rochelle appreciates the company as she keeps watch and Abbey appreciates the fact that Rochelle isn't constantly talking all the time.

~ Viperine's interest in being a makeup artist started at a young age when she saw other Gorgon females at her elementary school (a mostly-normie school) trying to hide their snakes beneath their hair. Being proud of her gorgon heritage, Viperine would show up every day with hairstyles that showed off the beauty one could achieve by working with snakes and hair instead of trying to hide one with the other.

((Edited for a grievous grammatical error!))

Introductions! / Hello, Fangled Fish
« on: March 10, 2014, 11:45:04 AM »
My name's Harp, and I just started collecting Monster High dolls December of 2013. I've been looking all over the net for a place to discuss not just the dolls but also HeadCanon, events in the storyline, and my personal favorite, non-canon compliant ships. You can probably guess from my avatar which ship is my favorite, but I love and respect every ship (romantic or friend-ship), regardless of number of ghouls in them or dynamic or "realism". I even love other people's original characters.

What I would love for everyone to know about me: I love reading what other people have to say. There's no such thing as "tl;dr" or "insignificant detail" or "silly thinking" or "too late" for me. If you want to reply to a comment I made two years ago to tell me that you personally love it when Clawd Wolf's ears lay flat, it's going to be relevant to my interests. I want to hear everything you have to say about Monster High.
