Discovered a line of articulated 1/6 dolls I'd never heard of-- Kenya Fashion Dolls, pretty cheap on the reseller market too.... AND best of all, they have articulated boy dolls in dark skintones!!!

Ordered 2 boys from ebay to see how I like them, I may have a few AA Ken dolls in need of elbow/wrist/knee upgrades...

Shameless self promotion time!

I've restocked my etsy with a few custom dolls including a Lagoona and a petite Barbie. I should be listing a few more soon, but feel free to check them out, tell your friends, etc. etc. XD

The Frankie custom has already sold, but I'm planning on making a few more pastel goth themed dolls in the future, so keep an eye out! ;)

Apoxie sculpt is your friend!! It air dries hard like plastic and can be painted to match whatever color your doll is!

And you can find elastic at any sewing supply/craft store. It should be really cheap, or you could use a very thin hair-tie....

Hmmm I think you might be able to loop an elastic around the toothpick you put in and try restringing thm like a ball-jointed doll or the early MH dolls.
Here's a tutorial on how to restring them.
http://monsterhighcatzi.blogspot.com/2010/09/defect-legs-fix.html

In the future, with peg sockets, you can rotate her legs so they're up above her head and then gently lever them until they pop out (that was a vague description sorry here's an example with pictures done on a barbie: http://dollsahoy.tumblr.com/post/73527131820/lets-do-a-modern-playline-barbie-leg-swap-1)

With loose joints I use the superglue method (TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!) where I put a few drops into the joint and then continuously move it until the glue hardens. There's a couple tutorials out there. I have done this a few times with mixed results, so please be advised before you try this out on your favorite doll-- you might freeze up their joints permanently!!!

Worse comes to worst you can get a replacement Operetta doll for under $10 and just use the body with the head you have! Hope this helps, sorry I don't have more resources!!

Giant Frankie was super cheap on amazon warehouse deals so I bit the bullet! I've always wanted to customize one of the 17" dolls... Her faceup was super messy so I didn't feel bad about wiping it-- excited to give her a new face!

Just made a good amount selling custom dolls, so of course I immediately blew it all on new dolls lol.
Bought two fashionistas (Blue Beauty and Lovin Leopard) and MTM bodies for both.

Blue Beauty got here early so I renamed her Carolina and snapped some photos. :)

Customs / Catwater's Customs: (11/8) Redo and style comparison!
« on: November 08, 2017, 04:54:28 PM »
Woo new thread! Let's see if I can keep it rolling this time hahahaha, I tend to customize in bursts rather than consistently so we'll see!

Found a bunch of customs from about a year ago that didn't sell before I closed my shop and decided that I really didn't like some of them. So I'm starting to redo the ones I feel inspired to fix. First up! Clawdeen:

before & after by Claire Atwater, on Flickr

Yeah I liked her braids but her vapid expression was... not inspiring. (Also her sealant was super shiny??? no idea why) Anyway I've been getting into pastel goth fashion, especially the stuff you see on tumblr, so I decided to try my hand at making a cutesy, colorful, but still dark and goth-y type of custom... I think she turned out okay! I'm still getting the hang of the look and how to incorporate it with my style of repaints, but not too bad IMO.

Clawdeen was actually my second pastel goth werewolf girl. I got a Silvi wicked cheap on amazon and redid her to my liking. Here's the two of them side by side.

I just thought it was interesting to see how my style's changed over the past year or so. Will hopefully be updating soon with more repaints and maybe some other do-overs.

Monster Discussion / Re: Doll Collector Stand-Up Comedy

Lmao personally I prefer doll collector memes over standup comedy. Here's a few gems

I will also say, being a doll customizer who is not very open about her hobbies and personal life, even with her friends, has made for some interesting interactions.
Once I forgot I was letting a recently decapitated faceup dry on my desk and my roommate noticed

RM: "Why is there a Barbie head on a pike?"
Me: "....."
Me: "She's there as a warning for the others"

Customs / Re: Customs I want to make/see made
« on: November 04, 2017, 09:34:21 PM »
Aaah I have so many of these ideas, but I've been slacking so much with customizing lately....

My main goal is to make Dipper and Mabel customs from Gravity Falls. I actually have at least their heads already!! I wanted them to be cartoony, more child-like, and 1/6 scale to fit with my other dolls, so I'm using the Disney Animator mini heads and pure neemo xs bodies. (I've tried at least one faceup on Dipper but I'm still figuring out the right style...)

I saw someone use a Strawberry shortcake head rebodied onto an EAH body to make Star Butterfly but I can't for the life of me figure out where I saw it. It looked amazing though-- she had the right face shape and lots of space to draw her cartoony eyes.

I'd also love to make Astrid and Hiccup from HTTYD-- and a poseable Toothless to go with them, but that seems like so much work, and I've never tried to make a poseable art doll myself.... I think Merida would be a good base for Astrid but I'm stumped for Hiccup-- he has such a distinctive nose I guess I'd have to sculpt it myself.

Anyway it's fun to plan all of these customs (even if realistically I won't follow through lololol) I still have so many unfinished projects....

Update: I FOUND THE ARTIST

I don't think they ever finished making her but here's the post I saw at least.... I think it's spot on for a base!!

I bought pure neemo bodies and 2 of the mini disney animator dolls to eventually become Dipper and Mabel from gravity falls..... They won't be here for a while but I'll be sure to post pics should anyone be interested....

Oh man... that ballet line. Not only are we getting molded/painted tights but also those horrible gappy joints?? I thought they would have fixed them after getting so many complaints about the Garden Ghouls. Oh well, at least they're articulated, and I kind of like those odd stiletto/ballet shoes they have. Reminds me of Lady Gaga

I think the Ghoul to Bat/Ghoul to Wolf dolls are neat though, it's a cool gimmick, and of course I like the minis.

IMO the quality of MH seems it's still declining but overall I don't have any new complaints-- also sorry for being so negative, I'll try to be more positive about the good aspects of new releases.  ^^;

Ever After High Discussion / Re: Stuff you'll miss about Ever After High
« on: November 01, 2017, 12:04:12 PM »
I'm going to miss the care and detail they put into the first wave of dolls. Unboxing my very first Apple was like Christmas morning for me-- every single one of her accessories had a theme or a clever detail but they all pulled together for a cohesive, gorgeous look.

I also just loved the bright colors, intricate accessories, and clever twist they put on everything-- Sig Ashlynn's glass slippers?? Still one of my favorite shoe molds. I LOVE the pumpkin vine detail they sculpted in.

Ok so I guess I'm just saying I'm going to miss the accessories lol--I can't help it!! The details are my favorite part of doll collecting!

Claire, your Silvi looks so cute!  She reminds me of an arctic fox. <3

Thanks!! I think wintery clothes suit her, with all that fluffy molded fur and blue/gray color scheme!

Kara I love your de-electrified Silvi!! I think she looks so much better with smooth hair, and she is a dead-on match for her movie counterpart! Not that I don't like curly or textured hair on dolls, but that frizzy half-crimped ponytail just didn't do it for me, ugh.

So I picked up a Silvi off of amazon since she was so cheap, with the intention of customizing her. Plans for that haven't changed, but I didn't expect to fall a little bit in love with how cute she is! After getting rid of the awful crimped hair and her 80s clothes, I was floored by her adorable furry ears, sweet blue and pink makeup, and how good she looks in Abbey's clothes!!!

My Silvi is quite bald at the moment and has a bit of her face rubbed off from some mishandling on my part, but I made her some earrings/rings and dressed her in some of Abbey's clothes while I wait for her hair to come in.

Here's a photo of my Silvi in the limbo between now and being fully customized, but I'd really like to see any other photos of her! Anyone else rerooted or repainted her? What clothes is yours wearing right now? Or did you like the big 80s theme she came with? Show me your Silvis!

Wanted / Looking for EAH Heartstruck Cupid!
« on: October 16, 2017, 02:21:26 PM »
Hello all. Looking to buy an EAH Heartstruck Cupid. She doesn't need all of her accessories, but I'd at least like her wings and bracelets to be included. Ideally I'd like to pay under $20 shipped but I understand shipping costs can get pretty high so I'd be willing to pay more if necessary.

Let me know if any of you have one you'd like to sell!

Shriek Wrecked Gil and Finnegan Wake-- Finnegan was cheap with free shipping on amazon, and I wanted to get Gil as well since I think they look related and I couldn't say no to an $8 doll lol. :P

I'm so freaking excited!! I won an ebay auction for a NIB Black Canary (my all time favorite DC hero) collector Barbie. Best part-- I got her for less than half her usual asking price!

Sorry if this has already been posted, but anyone collect the Rock Candy Funko figurines?? I was so excited to find out that they'd made LOTR figures.

I think I like the more realistic style of these figurines but they have the attention to detail I love on Funko pops! (And of course I have to get both of them for my desk lol)

They also made a bunch of Marvel/DC girls and some other sci-fi/fantasy heroines in the same style!

Here are some  random dolls... here's my Scooby Doo barbie girls repainted in their cartoony style (and made into MTM hybrids). Their face ups are not very good but I really wanted them to look more like their original cartoon versions. \_(ツ)_/
