Monster Discussion / Re: What's the last MH thing you bought? 3
« on: March 15, 2019, 02:53:15 PM »
A few things….

Bought a nearly-complete 13 Wishes Howleen - been wanting her for AGES! Got her for $4 at a local thrift store.

Got a purple 28 inch Gore-Geous MH doll from ebay for $16 plus shipping - very good shape, nice hair, has her dress and shoes plus had one of the black leggings and shoe cover, plus one of the green vine leggings. And I got VERY LUCKY and found the matching black legging and shoe cover at a different ebay seller! Score!

And a friend sent me a Boo York Mouscedes, deboxed but with everything.

Haha, good thread idea!

I bought a secondhand CAM Gargoyle manster awhile back, when he showed up he had two left feet!!

I thought it was hilarious because when people say someone can't dance or is clumsy,  they say 'oh, they have 2 left feet' - so I've kept him as-is.

Thats hilarious actually. Finding a replacement foot for that one might be tough. So yeah, for the laugh, you should leave it as it is! Hhaa

That's what I thought! I can put shoes on and it's not really going to be noticeable, but then I KNOW it's there anyway. I think it's funny.

I mean, they're monsters anyway…what's wrong with a mismatched body part or two?!

Monster Discussion / Re: Monster High 28" Gore-Geous Ghouls

Thanks, RenegadeAngel and Crimson Kitty for the info!

I have the green and the purple MH 28" dolls - still in their boxes because the coffin box and accessories make a nice display.

But I was wanting to have one to play with, so I recently got a loose one on ebay, only $16 plus shipping. (I got lucky! Most of them are much pricier.) I was pleasantly surprised that even with the straight legs with no knee joints, the legs don't splay out when the doll is seated…the legs bend straight forward, so that's nice.

My doll will stand by herself in her shoes, I'm thinking the no-knee-joints is due to the height and weight of the doll, so they will stand. The shoes are pretty much glued on, but I won't take the shoes off mine - they have weirdly-shaped feet, again probably to help them stand.

On mine, the top of the head has sparse hair rooting, so I'm considering hand-drilling into the hard plastic for adding maybe 20-30 extra hair plugs. Probably using a pin vise, and going slow, so that a drill doesn't catch on hair inside the head. (Thank you to Diana at TheDollPlanetHair on etsy for mentioning that when I sent her a question about rerooting them!! It never occurred to me…)

After getting an out-of-box 28" doll, I've decided that I prefer the 17" dolls due to their clawsome articulation. Still, the 28" Ghouls are cool and I look forward to making some outfits and accessories for mine.

I didn't see anything here on the forum discussing these super-large Ghouls…Mods, please feel free to merge if there's something I overlooked.

Anyone have the 28" dolls? (Monster High but also the one Ever After High 28" doll, Madeline Hatter)
Know of anyone who's done custom 28" dolls?
Have you made or bought clothes, wigs, accessories, props for your 28" doll?

Please share pics!
Thanks!

Casta Fierce has beautiful hair! Long, straight, thick, glossy. Can get a bit static-ish in the winter (cold/dry weather), but otherwise it's among my favorites!

I love Casta's hair!!!!

Also, since she's a bit bigger than the regular Ghouls (Big Sister size), I've put 'Manster' sized clothing on her with no problem. I got some pants from etsy in boy size, and Casta snagged those immediately! So if you have any Barbie or MH boy sized items, worth a try to see if they will fit. Good luck!

And thanks for those who commented on Casta's background, I learned a few things!

Monster Discussion / Re: How would YOU reboot Monster High? Would you?
« on: February 14, 2019, 09:01:34 AM »
What an interesting thread & idea!! Thanks for posting, it's always nice to have some 'outta the box' brain stretching...

I like some combination of the below concepts - literally go with the 'next generation' and have the younger characters take center stage. The older core Ghouls and Mansters are around, but they've gone on to college or ???

And to have better quality, even if it means dolls are more collectible and less play-oriented (even though higher prices would be the likely result). I just marvel over the creativity and originality present in the G1 dolls and gear. Collaboration dolls like Zomby Gaga (LOVE!) would be great, although I'm not sure that worked so well with Ari Hauntington, so I guess the collaboration has to be a good fit for the brand?

By going with the younger characters and the passage of time, we get a whole new pool of friends and supporting characters to go with the new young generation! And they get to have all new adventures and interests in the animated media - we wouldn't be limited by Clawdeen's interest in fashion, for example. Love the idea of a weekly Saturday morning cartoon, if budget is no constraint. New characters = new voice actors, with the original voice actors coming in as supporting roles & cameos.

ADORE the idea of a camping under the Lunar Eclipse adventure!!! And yes, would love to see a trans character.

Yes! Fix glue-seepage issues!!! Nice quality hair!! And sturdy, articulated bodies for all!!

Another idea (that other franchises have embraced) is a prequel approach - what were the core MH characters doing BEFORE they got to Monster High?

I would re-start it with a more grown up Howleen being the main ghoul, then follow up with Twyla, and perhaps Lorna, Moucedes, River, Kjersti, ect then just create all new characters. The generation one ghouls are kind of done to death but seeing them pop up every now and again as older ghouls would be nice too.

At this point, I probably wouldn't reboot it. Fashion doll lines aren't going very well, from what I can see at the local toy shops. Their shelf space just keeps shrinking.

If anything, I'd be more likely to go back in time and expand on the higher-end dolls from G1, to gear the franchise more towards being a collectable line rather than a play line, with more luxurious packaging, more detailed costuming, better QC, and more carefully selected themes. Collaboration dolls like the Zomby Gaga doll would also probably be a key feature, just to generate revenue with various fan bases. Barbie has done it with great success for decades, and that release in particular had a lot of really nice details in it.

neon, that filter you used with Frankie is awesome! Love the scratchiness! And how funny you captured a REAL LIVE GHOST on your 'potato'!!! But where's her white nightgown??? (scratching head)   :haha:

Glad you checked out Yann Arthus-Bertrand's work and liked it. I think his portraits of the animals and their humans are so special, very intimate. Good luck on your background-making!

I've always loved Jane Boolittle!! I actually like the non-filtered pic best, the filter loses her lovely purple face....

Bought some Minis! Happy to get a Deuce, although I could do without the stupid casketball painted on the side of his head, and might paint over it with his 'unnatural' hair color.

neon, also meant to include your Dark Queens in my adoration! And your write-up about them was very interesting.

There's a French photographer & environmentalist named Yann Arthus-Bertrand who did a series of books, people and their livestock. He used a backdrop, and to me his work in that series has a similar feel to yours in this thread. Thought you might like to check him out. Be sure to add 'livestock' to your google search...the man's prolific in alot of areas.

neon, I ADORE your Day 285 group shot! Shows just how expressive MH Ghouls can be! Such fun.

And sorry to hear those pesky migraines are at work again. Thanks for keeping up with the Challenge despite them, I'm really enjoying your pics!

My partner is a beautiful human being. He knew I was hoping to get a MiniFee when the sewing machine carked it, so he told me he'd pay for a body and other pieces, in order to get the current event head. ;__;

I am a spoilt woman, and when he told me he wanted me to order the doll, I was just crushed by sentiment.

Lhia, congrats on getting your MiniFee after all! And on having such a thoughtful and caring partner, makes it all the sweeter. Is this going to become your FAVORITE doll now?!

So adorable! Love that sushi roll! Did the red bowl and glass of lemonade come in your set? What other sets did you get?

neon, so many lovely pics! (I've been sick for the last week, so catching up now)  Thanks for the eye candy!

Especially love your Cleo (Day 273), so regal! And the 'reverse' of black silhouette on white backdrop in Day 274, stunning! Good props - chestnuts, horse toy. And Day 272 pose, I love the 'flying' element.

Thank you for taking the time to show pics with AND without the filters.

Rochelle! Influenced by my non-MH-affection for architecture and Paris. She's a French gargoyle with wings, what's not to love?  LoL
For me, Ultimate Rochelle would be Scaris. Love her aqua hair. Although Shriekwrecked is pretty awesome too...I don't mind that she's a reboot.

I also really love the 'horsey' MH characters: Avea Trotter, Neighthan Rot, and Nightmare. I always love to see a horsey element.

As for dolls, for me the CAM Sea Monster and Bonita Femur are the cat's meow.   :blackcat:

Lhia, great collection! In the instances where you've swapped parts, do you have a written record or just in your head?

Thanks! :D

I keep a spreadsheet of all my dolls, clothes, and accessories, including the custom and WIP ones! :)
Hence my need to inventory. I got a couple of bait lots a while back that I haven't updated in that sheet. They're just in a box and set aside because I got busy, and the weather wasn't MSC-spraying friendly the last few months.

My Tumblr also has a list of which dolls are swapped with which head, including the Novi hybrids. They're tagged in the cases of the dolls that I've taken photos of, too!
Ooh, will check your Tumblr then!

Happy Spring to you! Good MSC-spraying weather ahead, lol. We're headed into Autumn/Winter now, after a wildly rainy & hot Spring & Summer.

Additional question for anyone keeping a list and who has multiples - do you have a tagging or labeling system for the dolls? How do you know which is which, unless the multiples are just a single from each line?
Do you mean on the dolls themselves? I only have a few outright duplicates, and they're mostly either reroot or custom baits. Those that aren't, are modified at least partially, and redressed (eg: I have three sig Honey dolls. One is standard stock, one has had her hair styled into a fauxhawk and wears a Lagoona fashion pack 90% of the time, and one is a full custom in progress).
Yes, some kind of tag, ribbon, label on the doll itself....
