Off Topic / Re: Netflix She-Ra Animated Series
« on: October 10, 2018, 02:37:42 PM »
The trailer owns, Nimona gives me faith in Stevenson, and I'm pretty much hyped as heck for this. I'm a couple generations past the OG demographic but I used to catch He-Man and She-Ra reruns on late night Qubo and this looks like it's bringing something really fresh to the table.

That is... actually a pretty clever switch-up.

Also I like how Torelai (& the guys, at least Gil, right, I don't remember) is the only one in her original outfit. A doll they'd probably not rerelease keeps her outfit.

Also I don't quite like the new voices for either Torelai or Operetta.

Through some ninja-level freeze framing, I found that Toralei's gotten a new voice (that is, not America Young) in Paloma Rodriguez--a bilingual voice actress (ENG/ESP) who describes her range as "very young to mid-30s". Sparse IMDB page, but this profile says she's been doing VO for 4 years--newer than a lot of VAs who've been with the series. She also played Maya in Killer Instinct (yeah, I also went "Who in what?", she's a lady in a decent fighting game) for the PS4.

Cindy Robinson is still on as Operetta, though--maybe she's doing a new thing like Derryberry is.

If anyone would like it as proof, here's a snip of the VA roster for this episode:

And maybe the fox dude backgrounder from the movies, too.
wait, who?

There's a non-speaking werefox boy with a fox on his shirt who's often in the background of Electrified and WTMH. People originally thought he was Clawd.

Personally, I just want to know more about the skeleton boys. They seem like if you really leaned into it, you could make a really gnarly backstory.

And maybe the fox dude backgrounder from the movies, too.

Full disclosure, I was never that into collecting all the dolls, so my main thing is the new animation look. I was always into the animation, but this really brought it to a new level--the attention to light and color really helped bring out the personality of the ghouls and the world they inhabit.

I also love Moanica--she's legitimately menacing, charismatic, cool and cool-looking. I caught her hair streak glowing a bit in the movie, too, which is an awesome detail that played up the radioactive thing:

And I also like Ari's quasi-hippie theme and British accent. I remember seeing red on her outfits in stock photos--I hope they play that up in the future.

With the magic of modern technology, any dessert color is possible!

Hope pics come soon.

Some of the images are cheating a little with the amount of accessories, on closer inspection. Still a killer doll, though. That hair length and dark makeup gives her some major drama!

SHE'S ADORABLE.
I love her outfit too. Sad she's not articulated, but I need her. Are her socks and shoes molded on?

Nope! Which is awesome. I always love socks.

Strong cheekbones are mainly about bone structure, and occur naturally in many people. Very good for makeup.

Clawd was also around for a while. If I remember correctly, he was introduced in Jackson's diary.

It makes them scarier, I think, as well as more removed from actual dead people. Also (along with her eyes) Moanica's hair streak glows:

Same. Maybe Ogie Banks (Clawd's VA) is going back to do voice work for Bratz, considering he voiced Dylan back in the day.

Gigi and Ari are both voiced by Jonquil Goode, so it makes sense they'd sound similar. And on her dolls, Cleo's wraps have a very subtle gold tint--only slightly less distinct than the movie depiction. I understand wishing it looked stronger, though.

About Abbey being in the toyline and not in the movie--maybe the initial plan was to have her in it, but over time they decided not to. After watching Clawdeen's introduction webisode, I think it's safe to say her Generation 1 siblings are probably not coming to the reboot; so as to keep the focus on her (thinking in the corporate way, along with how a lot of corporate media stressed getting back to the central characters).

As for Clawdeen's identity: people often headcanon characters as LGBT as a means of relating to them, which can be helpful (when most media doesn't present a lot of LGBT representation) while sometimes also giving them a deeper connection to a character they love. In kids' media like Monster High, that's easier to do when you often can't be specific about addressing identities: nothing out-and-out that she's gay, but nothing out-and-out that she's straight either. This rule's been propelling fics and fandom for ages, too. My personal rule of thumb for characters is "whatever until confirmed something"; and like I've said before, lots of non-straight girls date boys in their lifetimes (like bi girls, or non-"gold star lesbians"). As a teen lesbian, I also don't mind either way, but from personal experience this is generally the process.

I wonder if we'll ever get any lyrics for Moanica's little reggaeton rap.

That's kinda cool, and I like the boxart.

Tiny thought bubble about the movie, some spoilers:

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Now, as for the webisodes... I get the storyline so far, pretty simple, nothing really off about it, but I think the animation has quite a few issues. For example: no rear/profile view on most of or all of the character models, a really obvious dependence on staying on-model, and an off ratio of curves to edges which kind of lowers design appeal especially in contrast to the 3D (Frankie's stitches are pointy on one end now  :|). But the background designs can be cool; like Ari and Cleo's rooms or the new science lab.  I'm really hoping quality increases on a curve over time, or it'll be a long wait to March.

With some money, good taste and elbow grease (yours or hired), any abode can be awesome.

It's cool that Monster High is a boarding school now.
