Off Topic / Image hosting sites?
« on: March 26, 2018, 02:58:02 PM »
As you can tell from my avatar, Photobucket cut off my posting images

Can anyone recommend a good (preferably free) image hosting site?
What do you use to post pics?

Clawdeen's Closet / Sugru shoes prototype
« on: November 15, 2015, 07:23:05 PM »
I had some left over sugru from another project, so I decided to experiment with making shoes.

I had gotten the foot wet first (water both smoothes out sugru and prevents it from adhering) and covered the whole foot, then fashioned a heel.

After it had cured for 24 hours, I used a scalpel to pry the sugru off by the ankle and make a slit by the heel. I then yanked the foot out slowly but firmly.

Since this was a spontaneous experiment, and I only had 15 minutes before it solidified, I didn't try very hard to get it smooth and even. As a result some areas were thinner and tore slightly, but all in all it came off in one piece, better than I expected.

Keep in mind that sugru CAN be cut, carved and sanded, so you can smooth it after it's cured too.

I think this was a success! I'll work on cleaning up the shoe tonight, post later.

Customs / Andalite custom ver. 2.0!
« on: September 05, 2015, 05:59:19 PM »

The now-locked thread about ver. 1.0

"WHY build a second version if you haven't finished the first?!" you may ask. A fair question, and a simple answer; I got commissioned. A good thing too, because not only does it give me the chance to redo and learn from my previous attempt, I'm making some pretty steady and timely progress. I started on this about a month ago, and I'm almost to a painting stage. You guys can expect updates :D

What's different from ver. 1.0:
  • eyestalks and tail are made from sugru (www.sugru.com), making them completely poseable!
  • used green stuff for certain features and details
  • used salvaged joints to make front knee joints
  • collaboration with my husband (he did the nose and ear sculpting. For more of his work, go to www.othikent.deviantart.com )
  • sculpting up the eye area

For reference, the blue parts are sugru, the green is green stuff (duh), the red is apoxy sculpt (just the color I happened to have) and the white is fix it sculpt (same as apoxy sculpt, but doesn't droop).

Customs / Green Stuff is AWESOME!
« on: August 11, 2015, 03:59:27 PM »
Hey there guys, been off here for a while, but I've kept up being crafty and resumed work on some projects. I've recently discovered the awesome properties of Green Stuff, AKA kneadatite, for sculpting on dolls.

Green stuff is well known among war gamer customizers (think Warhammer 40k) and frequently used to make small, delicate parts. It's a 2 part epoxy like apoxy sculpt, but whereas apoxy sculpt is hard and stiff like rock, green stuff has a bit of give, which makes it very resilient with small parts. Mind you, it's not very flexible like silicone, it's more like the material used to make MH hands. It can also be sanded, drilled and carved after it's cured. Ideal uses for it would be adding anything to vinyl faces, resculpting noses and ears, and making/modifying fingers.

It's not perfect of course. It's a bit pricey, the green color is kind ugly (unless it happens to work for your custom) so you'd have to paint it, and it can be finicky and harder to work with than something like sculpey or fimo. And very sticky at first too, but that also makes it nice and adhesive. And I would still use apoxy sculpt for most modifications especially on the stiffer plastic parts. But Green stuff is definitely what I'd recommend for anything on the head and hands. It might even be good for shoes, but I haven't experimented with that yet.

You can get it at hobby shops and some tabletop gaming stores, but online is often the cheaper option. This is a good online store: http://www.thewarstore.com/kneadatiteputtyandsculpting.html

I hope this helps some of you in custom making! :)

Off Topic / Duolingo: game addiction=effective language learning
« on: August 18, 2014, 01:23:39 PM »
Welcome to my newest time vampire.

https://www.duolingo.com/?desktop

You can play through the website or download the app (ios/android). So far they have French,  Spanish,  Portuguese, Italian and German for native English speakers (there are options for native speakers of other languages, for example learning Portuguese from Dutch).

If you find yourself easily addicted to casual games, this might be effective for learning another language. There are user comments for almost all the questions so you can gain insight and ask questions. It's far from perfect but it's a really good exercise/jumping point for getting you curious about other languages.

Plus, there are some really strange sentence combos that range from odd (the cat eats a potato) to disturbing (I'm eating a woman and she's eating a woman) so there's entertainment value even if you're a polyglot.

Je suis mange une femme et elle mange une femme. WTF..

Off Topic / Any interest in crochet plushies?
« on: July 19, 2014, 07:50:37 AM »
Also known as amigurumi? I've been thinking about doing them to sell, especially MH themed ones. I' not sure what people would be most interested in; chibi style dolls? MH Pets? I was thinking small objects would be best because they would be worth the time and not cost much (I was thinking $5-20 depending on size/complexity?)
This is my profile on Ravelry.com, to give you an idea what i can do: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/mistakenolive

Many are from patterns, but the Plants vs Zombies ones (excluding starfruit)  I designed myself.

I just wanted to gauge interest in the idea. If you have any ideas please share them!

Draculaura's Darkroom / Kurhn Doll- Long Nu, the Dragon Princess
« on: June 28, 2014, 07:27:41 PM »
Ok. I don't have a lot of time right now, so I'll just post these for starters.

Close up of face. The hair accesories are attached with plastic tags, so they're not removable. I might try later to make a head band or something.

Details of the pearls on her dress.

Picture of just the dress (no coat) and how long it is.

I took a ton more for giving a review later. I also want to get some beauty shots when it's nice out. Expect more later!

Box has *minor* damage on top, small scrape and very light dent:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

A slight discoloration on arms compared to his body. The Holt I'm customizing has that issue too. With the shades it's hard to check for eye wonk, I think his glasses are just slightly askew:

Asking $45 + shipping (which I have yet to figure out. It will depend on location and if I can fit this in a flat rate box.)

Monster Discussion / PC on NiB Swim Class Holt Hyde
« on: June 19, 2014, 03:30:28 PM »
I've seen between 50 to 70 here, but I don't know if he actually sold for that. The box is in good condition, a little scrape at the edge of the top. Because of the shades it's hard to tell if there's any eye wonk. The arm color is a tiny bit off compared to the body, not bad in my opinion. You only notice it if you're looking for it. The Holt I customized has the same issue.

What do you guys think?

Clawdeen's Closet / pattern test-thigh highs for boys
« on: June 15, 2014, 05:46:57 PM »

I made up this pattern for a project I'm working on and thought I'd share. It's still pretty rough and does NOT include seam allowance,  but does anyone feel like a guinea pig? :} just make sure to set your printer to 100% so it doesn't change proportions.  I provided the 1cm/inch marks so you can see if it printed properly. Also you'll want to use a very stretchy fabric,  pref. 4 way stretch.

I totally blame Magenta for this. XD

It needs work, comparing to the movie picture I see several inaccuracies. Not to mention hair XD

Customs / Resin casting wigs help!
« on: May 02, 2014, 05:23:20 PM »
Okay, I'm super new to resin casting. The only experience I have is just mixing resin up and filling a bottle. I want to tackle something that looks fairly easy, but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking,  Pinky?

I want to make a translucent version of Heath's hair! Only thing, I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how exactly to make the mold. Should it be one or two part, where do I pour in resin,  etc. I wanted to pick some brains here before getting ahead of myself.  The materials I have for casting are epoxy resin and easycast silicon mold putty. I'm not sure the putty will work well for a big piece like this (you mix part a and b for a minute then have 2 mins top to mold before it solidifies). What should I use? (and how much will it set me back?)

I've also considered sending the wig to someone who knows what they're doing. That would probably be mermaidsplash because a. She's closest to me and b. She's experienced. I would like to try it myself though . ..

Thoughts?

Off Topic / hookah discussion! (not a moany-groany thread)
« on: April 20, 2014, 09:30:58 AM »
Hey there! I noticed a couple other members mention they were into hookah, so I thought I'd start a thread. Lilithdrff recommended starting it here, just because of the slight adult content (tobacco use).

As per forum rules, we will NOT be discussing illegal substances or your use of them. The mods would probably close the thread, plus there would be repercussions for the offending poster.

LEGAL substances (stuff we CAN talk about) are shisha (tobacco mixed with molasses/honey/glycerin/flavoring), herbal molasses (non tobacco shisha), and vapor stones/steam atones (lava rock pebbles injected with glycerin and flavor, produces steam instead of smoke).

Me and my husband have been into hookahs since this past December, thanks to a friend of mine. We have four hookahs now, also thanks to my friend (he is moving for school and needed money/space, so we bought his collection and supplies,  including like 6 kg of shisha, 4 bowls including a harmony phunnel, hoses, and a kaloud lotus!)

Here's my display as of now:

The brass ones and trimetal one are Egyptian (hence why Cleo gravitated there) and I'm not sure about the silver one, except that it's a cheaper one.

Neither of us are cigarette smokers, so it's a little surprising to our other friends that we got into it  ^^; it is a lot different than cigarette smoke in that it's actually pleasant and doesn't stick around. We only smoke when there's company, so only once or twice a week.  Honestly the collecting is more addictive than the nicotine (I'm sure nobody here can understand the appeal of collecting shiny pretties  )

So, discuss!
-are you interested in/own a hookah?
-what shisha/LEGAL non tobacco alternatives do you use?
-post pics if you got em!

Enjoy!

Buy/Sell/Trades / MH doll sized HOOKAHS for sale!
« on: April 17, 2014, 01:56:55 PM »

Hey there, since people like the hookah I made several weeks back (as seen here), I've decided to make more and try to sell them! Above is what I have so far. PRICES WILL VARY as these are OOAK crafts. I will try to charge fairly, but I need to consider the materials and work done.

The tall, silver-copper is RESERVED for Lagoona, who commissioned me right away. She hasn't come on since last Friday though, and I need her to pay/give me an address. Similar sized hookahs will probably be around US$20.

silver one w/ blue beaded hose: US$10 (is complete, though I can wrap the mouthpiece handle in thread if buyer doesn't want it white)

The other two are WIPs, but are nearly complete. I included them to gauge interest.
The small silver one with light blue cord hose:USD$5, because it is rather small and the stem is slightly askew.

the brass one with the wooden bead: price pending. It was made by my husband, and I'll let him decide the price.

Commissions
Besides these, I will open three commission spots for now. I don't want to be overwhelmed, since I'm still in school right now.

Important Info!!
This is my first venture into selling crafts, so I have a lot to learn. I've done my best to make them as sturdy as possible (I used Zap-a-Gap super glue and quick hold E6000), but the hookahs are still fragile, so handle with care! These are not intended for children (for several reasons :P )
I use a mix of materials to make the hookah stem, so some beads are real metal or glass and some are acrylic with foil (ie plastic). I just want to be transparent about that, so I don't make it seem like they're all metal (I could try to do one in all metal if commissioned, but it depends on what materials I have available).

I will be taking Paypal only for now. PM me if interested.

Thanks so much, I hope you like them!

Customs / EAH Head Shaping attempt
« on: March 16, 2014, 11:23:32 AM »

I decided to try a head shaping technique I saw here: http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/bjoinks/10946727803/

I used fairly large paper clips (about 1.5 inches originally) and bent them in the shape you see in the third pic. It is important to get the 90 angle so it will put pressure on the head. At first I thought the paper clip wasn't strong enough to hold it in shape, but after I monkeyed with the ends it made it much stronger.  Using thick wire (probably at least 20 gauge) could work, as long as it can keep the tension on the vinyl head.

I haven't tried using hot water and then shocking it in cold water yet. I would coat the ends of the clip first so bare metal wasn't touching wet vinyl.

Ever After High Discussion / Ever After High Cosplay
« on: March 10, 2014, 02:22:56 PM »
If there is a fandom, there will be cosplay, and there's some good ones already! Most noteably Echoing Artemis in her Maddie cosplay and Die's Apple White cosplay. I know there are more (or will be), so please post them, and also feel free to discuss plans you have to do cosplay.

I'm planning on making a Cupid costume myself.  I'm actually plus-sized (as in very plus-sized), but I think with the poofier and longer skirts it might be okay. I won't start the craftier parts until I get the dress done. (me? procrastinate? never...)

After folks started posting cosplay stuff, I started looking into fabric and supplies myself. I started a Pinterest board to keep track of things and if anyone else wants to post on it, give me your username so I can add you! Because right now it's pretty bare..

Customs / WIP for waaay too long; andalite custom
« on: February 20, 2014, 05:44:40 AM »
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

(Put the bigger pics in spoiler because of size, sorry)

I've been sitting on this custom for waaay too long (July 2013)

I originally wanted to post only when it was done, but as you can see if I did that I may have showed it off :p she's an andalite, an alien species from the kids scifi book series Animorphs. I made her from CAM and barbie parts, and apoxie sculpt. She needs alot of smoothing out still -,- I just wanna do her face up T-T

and yes, I was inspired by dgrequiem's centaur, except I used barbie parts and reused joints from cam parts. And the telepathic, mouthless blue alien with eyestalks is a bit of a tangent too XD

Draculaura's Darkroom / My first boy doll! (sorry for huge pics)
« on: September 21, 2013, 07:10:47 PM »
I finally got my hands on swim Holt (2 of them actually).  It's the first time I had seen any boys in store, and the first opportunity to look at the boy body in person. I think it's quite nice actually (though, low rider briefs? 0_o )

I have a custom in mind for him, so first thing I did was remove his hair;

Nocturnal CAM stole his hair right away..

And of course, after hearing Barbie clothes fit boys, I *had* to try...

BTW... After trying this, I need a Heath and Sailor Mars outfit RIGHT NOW

Customs / Short Draculaura- nearly complete!
« on: August 08, 2013, 01:51:20 AM »
Can't make a tall Abbey without a short Lala, can I?

Her paint job is still quite messy (though you probably can't tell from the cell phone pic) and she's unsealed, but this is pretty much the end product. I'm a little peeved that I modded the torso, only to have it end up the same height as before :x ^^;
