Off Topic / Mattel Closing New York Office
« on: April 11, 2018, 01:52:50 PM »
Saw this today:

Well, I'm not sure if them closing their New York Office in order to help them get out of their debt will affect the dolls quality for the better, but things are still looking a bit dark for Mattel to have them do something like this.

What do you guys think? Hopefully closing that office will help relieve some of the costs and those can be relocated into their products, but if that's the case i'm pretty sure it will still go to the brands they make products for, not necessarily their own.

Monster Discussion / Abbey's Ice Sculpture Differences?
« on: March 17, 2018, 10:09:30 PM »
Hey guys!

I was looking around for something about this here, but I couldn't find anything, so I figured it would be ok to post a topic about it. Hope it's ok!

A couple of days ago I was able to get my hands on my first Abbey Bominable doll, her Art Class release. I was very excited but I did notice something strange - a lot of the dolls' ice sculptures were stark white, and only one of the bunch had a beautiful iridescent/icy texture to it. I was lucky enough to get that one since the face paint and details were perfect, but it got me thinking - does anybody know why is that?

I looked up on Ebay and out of all the ones on sale, there's also only two of them that have that kind of sculptures. If you haven't seen it, here's how it looks (kind of, it's much better in person):

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I tried looking up on the internet, to no avail

Hey Guys!

I wanted to bring to you something that might be news for many of you, and for the more sensitive, the idea of this happening could affect the way you see the franchise. So I suggest you thread lightly when reading this topic.

I want to assure you that I love MH, but as an artist myself, I have to stick to the artists, not the big companies and what they could have done.

As the title implies, there was a Monster High before Monster High. Not only that. But there was a Frankie, a Clawdeen, A Cleo, a Lagoona, and many other monster girls who studied in a school called Monster High before Mattel's Monster High.

Back in the late 90's - early 00´s the artist Aaron Bordner created a comic about Monster Girls attending to a High School made for them. The idea came to him after drawing some pin-up pieces made for tattoos of a girl Frankenstein. The comic was published under SIRIUS, a known publisher for all things goth and underground back then, and received some attention and got a cult following, but for various reasons it never got to be as big as it should have been.

The main characters of this story were Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein, Lupey, daughter of the Werewolf, Cleo, daughter of the Mummy, among others.

Enter a couple years later, and in 2007 - 2009 Mattel develops Monster High, a doll line about Monster Girls attending to a High School made for them.

Of course, considering how almost every name and character, the storyline, and even relationships between the girls seemed to be lifted from his original comic, this really affected Aaron, who, after reaching out to them in regards to this, only received a "we don't think they look alike" as a response, followed by a letter. What are the contents of said letter, I personally don't know, but I highly doubt Mattel would get involved if it wasn't something that made them feel uncomfortable with people knowing. He was never asked for permission, he was never involved in anything regarding the development of Mattel's Monster High.

I will show you some pictures of the girls, but honestly, if you'd like to see it for yourself, Aaron Bordner has a facebook page, along with a page solely for Monster High, where you can contact him and see the first release of the original comic yourselves.

Here are some of the girls:

I personally reached out to him and he's an amazing dude. Full of passion for what he does and not only he has Monster High (that he hasn't worked on for a while, due to the frustration this caused him) but a very intricate and interesting comic called Alice Sinn. I got the honor to create the cover for the Monster High 20th anniversary release, and it's the profile picture you'll see on the page!

I wanted to bring this situation out on the light, since I don't think it's been known/talked about a lot. What are your thoughts on this?

Introductions! / Hello there everyone!
« on: February 14, 2018, 05:55:10 PM »
Hey everyone! I'm so excited to be here!

My name is Miguel, I'm a 27 year old art student from Panamá.

I've been reading around the forums for a while now, on and off, but never managed to make an account or participate, which is a shame because this forum seems full of lovely people. So I finally decided to become a part of the community, specially because MH and doll collecting has become one of the most fun hobbies for me.

I've been collecting dolls for less than 6 months, actually! I had always been interested in MH dolls, but the prices in my country were ridiculous (think $40 and up for basic dolls, and over $70 for playsets) and it wasn't until last year that apparently all kids decided to forget about the girls and the mansters, so all the stores literally dropped their prices to 2, 3, and 4 dollars.

As you can imagine, I was coming home with at least 5 dolls a week. In less than 6 months I own over 50+ dolls and I couldn't be happier.

The reason why I collect MH dolls is mostly because I've always been into dark themes and gothic motifs. I love anything to do with the old classic monsters, so MH was just right up my alley.

In fact, my thesis project is a doll line inspired by Monster High!

In regards to my collection, I'm more of a "one of each" kind of guy, and I only want to collect the ones that really speak to me. My favorite line has to be Freak du Chic.

My favorite Ghoul is C.A Cupid, and my favorite Manster is Neightan Rot (With Clawd as a close second)

I hope to be able to share some of my art, opinions and experiences with you all!
