Customs / Modifying Animal Ears
« on: January 08, 2019, 03:18:30 PM »
I wanted to alter the shape of Catrineís ears and was curious if anyone had success with projects of that nature. Ideally, Iíd get the ears to look like those of a Scottish Fold, but was unsure if a heat gun would yield good results (without impacting the rest of the head) or if it would be best to just make new ears out of something else and cut off the old ones. Thanks for any suggestions!

Clawdeen's Closet / Sewing machine eating fabric, help?
« on: December 05, 2018, 08:23:01 PM »
So as the title states, my sewing machine is eating my fabric and Iíve had to resort to handstitching doll outfits. It seems to only be fabrics with stretch in them, the jeans I sewed were fine, but the jacket I made with a knit fabric was constantly eaten. Iíve looked for tips online and followed them as much as I could, like I switched to a straight stitch presser foot and I got some tissue paper to put under the fabric, then I tried with a beanie later (a kind of stretchy polyester I think?) and it was good for a few slow stitches and then one random stitch caused the whole machine to go crazy and lock up, ruining the fabric. I figured Iíd ask for assistance in here since tips would be more specialized for small scale sewing. Thanks for any advice!

Customs / Spectra/Invisi Billy....invisible?
« on: September 18, 2018, 10:30:34 AM »
I'd like to make a future custom where the doll itself is "invisible", and was wondering if anyone knew if the entire doll had the translucent effect or just the lower arms/legs. Like as an example, Lagoona's hands (at least for the originals, I think the reboot is different) are translucent with skin paint on the hands, leaving the webbing clear, but the rest of the body is standard plastic. Spectra has lower arms/hands and legs/feet making a white to translucent gradient, are her torso and upper arms/legs translucent as well? Same question for Billy; just wanting to find this out before I start scrubbing at the body and potentially ruining something. Thanks!

Off Topic / Mercari Issues
« on: September 11, 2018, 12:38:48 PM »
I don't like making another topic here so soon after my last, but I need to vent.

I recently found out Mercari was a thing, and was surprised at the dolls that were listed on there, usually for reasonable prices. I saw a seller list multiple small doll lots I was interested in, and messaged her asking if she would combine the listings to save on shipping, and if she'd take a bulk price, which she accepted. She created a customized listing, reuploaded the photos of the lots I wanted, listed it for our agreed upon price, and I purchased it. I asked her to hold off on shipping for a few days since I was moving that Sunday and wanted to ensure it arrived at the new place after I was there to collect it (of course, didn't want it to get stolen off the porch, nor was I keen on chancing having it sent to my mom's and hope it showed up before I left, then having to have my mom ship it or one of us drive 2.5 hours to get it in my possession. She agreed to this, and it showed up yesterday, just after my move finished.

If you're unfamiliar with Mercari, payment is held until receipt of the package and contents are confirmed by the buyer, so I always immediately open the package to make sure everything is good so the seller can get their money ASAP. When she relisted it, she used one photo from a lot that cut off two of the dolls, and I couldn't remember what one of them was, so I was looking forward to seeing the "mystery doll", as I was setting the dolls out to ensure everything was as expected. The first non-pictured doll I pulled out was a Catrine, which didn't jog my memory at all, but I figured it must have been correct. Then I kept pulling out dolls I never ordered.

The part of the lot I was most excited about, which contained a Clawdia, Bloodgood, Nefera, Howleen, and Wydowna, was not in the box. I was instead sent a lot of some of the first wave dolls, which are of course nice, but not what I paid for. There was also a Catty, which I think is what I actually ordered, but I honestly don't remember at this point. I contacted the seller to let her know of the mistake, and that if she sent me the correct ones, I'd send the first wave back to her. At that point I noticed a listing placed two days after I bought from her, with the dolls I ordered from her, plus a Djinni and a newer Cleo, that was sold to someone else. I relayed this to the seller, and of course at this point I'm just incredibly upset that I paid for these dolls and she went and sold them to someone else after taking my money.

Last night, I contacted Mercari support with as much info as possible, since after 3 days they will automatically release my payment to her and I wanted to see what my options were. The seller reached out to the other buyer, who is, understandably, refusing to send that package back for a refund. I'm of course upset because I pretty much end up the loser no matter what happens. Mercari does not allow partial refunds, so my options are:
A) Seller issues a refund, I send everything back, end up with no dolls
B) I accept the order as is/let it time out, paying for something I didn't order, while the seller gets paid twice for one listing, then I have to deal with trying to sell the unwanted dolls which I don't think would cover the cost of individually buying the dolls I should have received, which can reach upwards of $100 total given the rarity of some of them.
C) Mail the unwanted dolls back to her and hope that she would issue a partial refund on her own, given that it would be taking place outside of any support scope so no one could help me if she doesn't pay me back.

She's been continuing to message me asking what she needs to do, and I told her that I've contacted support and am waiting on their response. She was told this twice already, and after the second time, she canceled the order on her own, telling me she canceled it and is thinking the best thing to do would be for her to lower the price and me to rebuy it at the lower price. While this is a reasonable suggestion, I'm livid because now I've received a full refund for an order that I (as far as Mercari is concerned) received, and now it's on me to pay her again. I told her I was waiting on support's response, as they act as the mediators and obviously know how best to handle these situations, and now I end up looking like a scammer for not paying her for the order. She's messaging me a lot now, asking what I want to do about it, and I'm just so frustrated because she keeps making this messier and messier and making the whole situation worse for me when I did nothing wrong. I confirmed that the new listing had the right images, I paid her, I contacted support and waited patiently when an issue was determined; she messed up the listing and sold my items to someone else, she gave me a full refund without having a plan for the next steps.

I was really looking forward to those dolls, I know that it's such a ridiculous thing to be upset about given the state of the world, and even what day it is today, but I can't help but be frustrated with the whole situation. Stuff like this seems to constantly happen to me despite my best efforts to be a fair, honest, and trustworthy person, and I continuously get stolen from, scammed, and cheated in so many aspects of my life. Dolls are supposed to be my escape from the negativity in my life, not contribute to it.

Edit: So she's started following me on Mercari and continuing to message me, threatening to contact Support (ironic imo), and I've just been letting it happen since I knew they'd reply to me soon. Got a reply this morning (the following day) basically saying that they agree that a full refund was necessary (despite me not asking for it and me receiving the bulk of the order correctly). I notified her of this and she's planning to contact them herself (and I also replied to them asking what they would have suggested had she not gone and issued the refund on her own), but I'm not sure how well it's going to go over for her, since she relisted already-purchased items and provided a refund with no outside prompting. I think she's aware that it's not going to go well for her given that she's asking me to pay a lower price before she contacts Support, so I just let her know that I'm waiting on our respective Support responses before moving forward. I certainly feel bad that she's out the cost of the 5 lots but it was due to her own actions, and while I probably will end up taking her up on the lowered amount she suggested, everything is leaning toward me not being obligated to do this.

Customs / What's your workspace like?
« on: August 12, 2018, 09:04:42 PM »
Sorry if Customs is the wrong place, there's a few places it could probably fit!

I'm about to move and have been giving a lot of thought to where I'm going to be doing my repainting, and planning out my craft corner in my head. Unfortunately we didn't get the place with an entire bonus room with built-in display shelves (which would have been perfect, I'm still so sad about it) so I really have to think about how to make a small amount of space work. So I come to you customizers for further inspiration: what does your workstation look like? Do you have a room devoted to hobbies, or is it tucked into a corner? Are you utilizing wall space or preferring drawers? If you have children or pets, how are you keeping your stuff safe? I'd love to see pictures of everyone's little workstations!

Off Topic / Don't do that to my customs!
« on: August 06, 2018, 02:09:50 PM »
So I've only made 2 customs that were listed, and due to my crazy living situation, my dolls are at my mom's for safekeeping, and I noted on my listings that people could message me if they were interested in them, I could retrieve them and give the go-ahead, then they could purchase and receive them in a timely manner. Well after half a year, I finally got a message about my first listing, and I was so excited! I opened the email notification and...

Hi I am interested in this doll. I've never had one of these... I'm looking to make her into a dragon or mermaid... is that do- able with her...she has the right coloring. Thanks.

I'm kind of offended at this, like I put all this effort into the doll and you message me telling me the changes you want to make to it? Not to mention it's my Elle custom, with "computer chip" eyes (and all the robotic parts that are already part of the doll) so I don't know how they plan to make it work for a dragon or mermaid without just straight up erasing all of my work. I'm so confused about this though, why spend $40 +shipping on a OOAK that you're going to mess with rather than buying a bait doll for a fraction of the cost? Am I missing something here? I mean on one hand, it's their money, but on the other, that's my time, energy, and design. It feels even more discouraging than the fact it hasn't sold yet, you know? Like if it hasn't sold, I can attribute that to a bunch of factors, but this feels like "I don't like what you did so much that I want to entirely change it". Ugh. Now to figure out how to nicely reply...

Customs / Lagoona Hand Webbing
« on: January 21, 2018, 12:26:25 PM »
Hey all!

I'm going to be working on a commission soon, and they want a Lagoona doll as the base, but are not fond of the webbing between her fingers. Has anyone had any success removing this with an X-Acto knife or is it best to just replace the hands with those from another doll and do my best to color match to Lagoona's skintone? Thanks for any suggestions and advice!

Hi all, but primarily Scandinavian customizers!

I need to sell my MSC, which was only used on a couple dolls. I would need to sell to someone who can receive it via ground shipping, since MSC can't go on planes. I paid 197SEK for it (current rate about $25) and I'm looking to sell it for 137SEK ($17), plus shipping costs.

Looking to sell this ASAP, unfortunately it will just get trashed otherwise and it would hurt me to waste it, so please let me know if you're interested!

Customs / Resource: Blank Doll Heads
« on: May 09, 2017, 08:48:44 AM »
I wanted to have an area for blank dolls to map out future projects, and figured it would be a good idea to share for other customizers and open for contributions! AshGUTZ had some very nice photos on her site (which appears to not be working and leads to a phishing site) but there were only a few ghouls on there (luckily looks like there's still some on her dA; There's also but it doesn't seem to have been updated in quite some time. I figured it would be nice to have something here that might get updated a bit more frequently. I don't care what you do with any photos I personally take and upload, as long as you don't claim that you took the photograph.

Any contributions are welcome and will be added to the first post. Any contributions will have their name next to it, any without are mine. It would be nice to have a head on shot, and at least one profile and 3/4 view, and views from the other sides are always welcome! Please also submit either bald dolls or with their hair pulled back to allow a clean view of the face. Other preferences are natural lighting with a solid color or not-busy background (any wall is preferable to a bedroom floor), with no obstruction to the doll head (don't hold it in your hands and cover parts of the face)

Clawdeen's Closet / Making your own clothing patterns
« on: April 24, 2017, 09:20:28 PM »
So I just stumbled upon this video and thought it would be a fun thing to share, especially since I know how much of a pain it can be finding the right print for your custom clothes. This way you can make sure you get the pattern you want at a size that won't look silly on the doll!

This requires Krita, which is a free art program, and from the bit of poking around I've done with it, seems to be a pretty good program! Of course, you'll also need something to print it on, like the printable fabrics you can find at Joann or the freezer paper method if you want to do it at home. There's also the more expensive sites like Spoonflower, but I'd likely recommend that only if you want to sell your designs and require a lot of your custom fabric to work with.

Customs / Tips on reshaping ears?
« on: April 05, 2017, 03:00:31 AM »
I tried searching for this and mostly got results on reshaping the entire head, or something unrelated like reshaping feet or piercing ears.

For an upcoming custom, I'm wanting to reshape the ears of a Monster High doll to a more humanlike shape. I'm thinking Draculaura miiiight be able to get away with not changing anything since the point of her ear isn't that dramatic, but for dolls like Venus where it's clearly pointed, how would one go about rounding it off? Would sandpaper be the best bet or is there another tool that would do a better job? Is there a risk of accidentally making a hole in the head where the top of the ear was or is the material thick enough that this isn't an issue? Thanks in advance!

Off Topic / Monster High ID help please!
« on: March 23, 2017, 10:42:20 PM »
Finally went through a lot of dolls I purchased, got them in their proper outfits, and these are the leftovers. There's some items where I thought clearly it belongs to a specific doll and then I can't find the line. Any help would be great!

Note that the three items on the bottom row didn't seem to fit properly, so my guess is they're Barbie or something in that size range. Not so interested in IDing those if they for sure aren't MH items, thanks!

I'll probably be back with more once I sort through the CAM stuff. Thanks again!

edit: discovered the purse is from one of the Inner Monster sets

double edit: Just a couple more. I feel like the dress is an obvious Draculaura but for the life of me I can't find which one

I'm going to go ahead and turn this into my general customs thread c: I'll keep the initial post under the cut just as a future reference, but now that my first is done, I'm itching to do a second, and third, and all of my dolls!

I have an Etsy shop set up, and I am interested in taking commissions at some point, so if you're interested in having your own made, let me know and we'll work something out!

Buy/Sell/Trades / DIAPERS.COM: Finds and Sales
« on: March 21, 2017, 02:29:49 PM »
Hope I'm doing this right! Also I only really look at MH so I can't accurately speak to the lines and pricing on EAH or anything else they list, sorry!

I just got an email from Ebates saying is doing their friends and family sale right now and I know they sell dolls. Unfortunately the dolls aren't included in the F&F but a lot of them are already on sale right now, and it looks like new customers can get 20% off their order with the code TRYUSMAMA, which doesn't appear to exclude toys. There's quite a surprising selection on there, like all 4 Monster Exchange dolls and a few 17" dolls, plus a few lines I haven't seen in a while like Scaritage.

If you have and activate Ebates, it's another 2% cashback (I'd be happy to provide a referral code if anyone wants one, Ebates gives cash back on a ton of sites so I'd recommend it even if you don't use this site's offer), so you can end up saving quite a bit!

Clawdeen's Closet / Help with odd outfit
« on: March 12, 2017, 05:40:56 PM »
So for a friend's birthday, I wanted to customize a doll of a character she likes for her, along with an outfit or two. Her favorite outfit of this character's is an orange suit, like a mascot suit (head arms and legs sticking out of a giant orange). I've never even considered how to make a circular outfit, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. The only thing I've been thinking might work is hollowing out and making limb holes for this, but not sure how well that will work, or how best to fasten the two halves together, or if there's possibly something that would work better. Thanks!

Looking to sell these dolls before I move overseas. All images can be clicked for fullsize, and willing to negotiate prices. Will ship internationally, however you are responsible for shipping costs.
Currently available:

A Barbie I bought at the circus (Barnum&Bailey?) as a child. Her name is Sandy, but I can't really find anything about her online. Her hair needs a bit of care (it was a large poofy ponytail, similar to FdC Honey's pigtails with less tight curls, but the rubber band holding her hair got hard and snapped apart, if I can find another band I'll put it in), but otherwise in very good condition. Asking $5 + shipping

Generation Girls Mariko. Comes with most accessories and a stand, in very good condition. Bands in the back are beginning to snap, but hairstyle is held and maintained. This image (not mine) shows all accessories. Mine is missing the item in the doll's hand, Generation Beat magazine, microphone, orange mini game console, karaoke machine and CD, yellow watch, and one of the thin cardboard CD cover things. Asking $15 + shipping

The remaining images ARE NOT MINE, unfortunately the remaining dolls are in storage and I cannot access them right now. Next time I am at my storage unit, I will take pictures and update this thread. However all of mine are still in their box and have not been opened. There may be slight wear to the box but the doll is intact.
See's Candies Barbie Asking $20 + shipping
Hollywood Premiere Barbie Asking $25 + shipping
Legally Blonde 2 Barbie Asking $20 + shipping
Swan Princess Barbie Asking $30 + shipping

Update: Found some EAH dolls in a MH lot I purchased, and figured I'd offer them here before going elsewhere with them.
From what I was able to find, they are
Maddie Hatter Signature
Raven Queen Thronecoming
Briar Beauty Signature (SOLD WITH JOURNAL)
Briar Beauty Getting Fairest
+ Briar's Legacy Day dress, Apple White's Signature headband, C.A. Cupid's Signature shoes (discovered the error after the picture was uploaded, I have since switched the shoes so Maddie will arrive with the correct shoes!)

Dolls come with everything shown, I have no idea if they're complete, and aside from Raven, I would recommend these for a customizer rather than a collector, as most of their hair needs some TLC. Also found a black hairbrush and silver stand base, which I will include as well but are not pictured.
$5 each or $12 for everything shown (minus anything marked as sold)

Update: Listing MH stuff I'd like to get rid of before the move. I don't think any of the dolls are complete.

Clawdeen's Closet / That fabric print would look perfect on my doll!
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:27:05 PM »
Despite having hardly any sewing experience, I've had an interest in fashion design for quite some time, and although it would be difficult working with such small-scale clothing, customizing doll clothes seems like fun! I popped into my local Joann tonight to get a hands-on look at some of the fabrics, and one in particular caught my eye and just made me think "How cute would that be on the Shriekwrecked line of dolls?"

Joann Link

Unfortunately I don't know if the actual fabric would be good for doll clothes, but the print instantly made me think of that particular line of dolls. There was another nice sugar skulls fabric perfect for Skelita, but my phone died </3

Have there ever been any prints you've seen, or even items of people-sized clothing that immediately made you think of a doll?

moving to Clawdeen's Closet from Monster Discussion - Melissa

I didn't see any similar unlocked topics, sorry if it's been done before!

As the title suggests, what dolls do you feel there isn't enough merchandise of, or has been neglected lately that you would love to see more releases of?

If I only could choose one, my hands-down absolute pick would be Ghoulia. I think she has an absolutely gorgeous face mold, and I'm so discouraged that she seems to have been tossed to the side. I brought up her neglect to a friend who doesn't know really anything about MH, and her reaction was, "They can't get rid of Ghoulia, she's a main character!" (She decorated lots of Monster High cakes and only really knows the mains, and considered Ghoulia to be the face of Monster High branding). While I haven't heard any confirmation that she's being discontinued, her lack of releases is pretty disheartening.

Others I would love to see more of:
Scarah - Love her style and for not having eyes, she's super adorable!
Skelita - Who doesn't love cute skeleton girls?
Honey - What's not to love about her hair? Plus her color scheme is gorgeous.
Operetta - Though not as neglected as some of the others I've mentioned, red and black are my favorite colors, I love 50s fashion, and I love musicals, including Phantom, so I have to include her haha
Gooliope - I know she's pretty new but I hope she gets more than two dolls, she's so cute and I love slime girls!
Robecca - Steampunk has always fascinated me, so I loved her as soon as I saw her.
Wydowna/Iris - I have a weakness for extra body parts (hence why I love Peri and Pearl so much and grabbed a bunch of Kalas), as well as missing features (plus I really like eyes). Come on, only two dolls each, and they're exclusives?

And while it's a long shot, some of the dolls from their own line (like Boo York's Elle Eedee and all the Brand Boo Students) I would love to see more of. They gave the girls introduced in Frights, Camera, Action! a few other dolls, I can dream they'll bring others back! Speaking of dreams, rereleasing CAM sets would make me so happy! I love the three-eyed ghoul especially, but it's impossible to find her for a reasonable price.

Who do you hope to see more of?
