Customs / Natural fibers question
« on: June 23, 2018, 01:44:55 AM »
Me again, with yet another hair question! I think I mentioned it before but I highly prefer natural fibers over synthetic and so I ordered some pastel colours of Tussah silk. I also have some romie rovings and superfine Merino. Thing is, I've only seen tutorials on wigs made with brushed yarn or various synthetic fibers and I'm wondering how I can treat these fibers, what kind of heat they withstand, etc. So far I've made a test weft of each to see what I can expect to work with and silk is super finicky and sheds like a (censoring myself here but there was fluffy bits everywhere). Romie is strangely very...plastic-y? but it'll work perfectly for making long hair I think. Anyway, my question is: does anyone have experience with these fibers and can I follow any wig tutorial with these (ex. could I make a Mozekyto brushed yarn wig but replace the brushed yarn with silk) or do I need to find specific resources to work with natural fibers?

Welcome Fantoma!
I'm from the outskirts of Montreal myself so yay for another Quebec dwelling monster! I became a fan of Monster High around the same time as you did but never actually bought any doll until last December so my own collection is only growing! I'm also terribly disappointed in G2 - seeing the new dolls in store now is simply sad, I found myself apologizing to the small aisle of Monster High dolls at Toys R Us the other day because they looked...well, you know how they look :drop: Anyway, I hope you'll have fun here, everyone is really nice!

I should've mentioned that it's for a 17" girl so I need quite a bit more than for a regular MH doll. I also need to plan for possible mishaps since I never get it right the first time.

Clawdeen's Closet / Designing your own fabric print?
« on: June 13, 2018, 09:23:11 PM »
Hey guys!
So I'm trying to make an outfit with a very specific theme and I can't find any print that would fit so I thought I'd design it myself. Problem is, Spoonflower is super expensive when you're Canadian and just need a little bit of fabric with a print (I definitely don't need a whole yard). I'm making a pair of knee high socks, a graphic t-shirt and probably an oversized hoodie - I'm going to make the design for the shirt front and I need two different but matching prints for the socks and hoodie. Someone mentioned on my blog that there are printable fabric sheets and that @Kara Zor-El might know something about it? In any case, if anyone has tips and/or experience with making your own fabric prints/designs, I'd love to hear them!

Monster Discussion / Re: How many of each character do you have?
« on: June 09, 2018, 02:44:31 AM »
I really don't have that many dolls and a lot of them are being customized in one way or another. Some of them are being turned into different characters but I'm going to count the original mold as the character.

Amanita Nightshade: 1
Astranova: 1
Avea Trotter: 1
Batsy Claro: 1
Catrine DeMew: 1
Casta Fierce: 1
Dayna Treasura Jones: 1
Draculaura: 3
Elle Eedee: 1
Ghoulia Yelps: 2
Gilda Goldstag: 1
Gooliope Jellington: 2
Honey Swamp: 3
Howleen Wolf: 1
Isi Dawndancer: 1
Jane Boolittle: 1
Kjersti Trollsøn: 1
Lorna McNessie: 1
Moanica D'Kay: 1
Mouscedes King: 1
Operetta: 1
Porter Geiss: 1
Rochelle Goyle: 1
Sirena Von Boo: 1
Skelita Calaveras: 1
Sloman "Slo-Mo" Mortovitch: 1
Toralei Stripe: 1
Twyla: 1
Vandala Doubloons: 1
Venus McFlytrap: 2
Viperine Gorgon: 1

Currently, Astranova, Batsy, Dayna, Gilda, Isi, Kjersti, Lorna, Mouscedes, Skelita and Viperine are without a face and/or hair and/or clothes. Catrine, 2 Draculauras, 1 Ghoulia, 1 Gooliope, 1 Honey, Howleen, Moanica, Rochelle, Slo-Mo, Toralei, Twyla and 1 Venus are being turned into OCs so they're also in vaious states of...undoing? It's a big mess. But Signature Amanita, Avea, Casta, I Love Shoes Draculaura, Elle, Freaky Fusion Ghoulia, Shriekwrecked Gooliope, FCA Honey, Signature Jane, Wave 1 Operetta, Porter, Sirena, Vandala and Wave 1 Venus are all displayed with their original clothes, hair, faces and accessories.

Customs / Re: Cyber dreadlocks?

I tried backcombing since it was the only thing I hadn't tried yet and acrylic yarn just...doesn't take to it. It knotted a bit and then pretty much just fell apart. I'll order some kanekalon, I usually don't work with synthetic fibers (which is why the brushed yarn was set aside) but I mean, they're cyberdreads with a bunch of nylon threads, ribbons and foam strips so it works.

Monster Discussion / Re: Price check? :)
« on: June 05, 2018, 09:51:35 PM »
These are approximates from the sold listings on Ebay so some were a bit higher and some a bit lower depending on the seller but here you go:

Sig. Howleen $12
13 Wishes Howleen $15
Ghoul Fair Howleen $12
Gloom&Bloom Jinafire $40
Sig. Nefera $40
Vandala $20
Dawn of the Dance Frankie $15
Boo York Deuce $10
Sig. InvisiBilly $25
Sig. Spectra $15
Bloodgood $20

I tried to stay within recent sales to get an accurate price although I know people sell some of them a lot lower or a lot higher. Also you didn't mention if Headmistress Bloodgood comes with Nightmare so this is just the average price for the dressed doll alone, without her horse.

Customs / Cyber dreadlocks?
« on: June 05, 2018, 09:31:57 PM »
Hey guys!
I've been sick a lot lately so I haven't been super active but I'm very slowly working on a cybergoth custom and right now I'm stuck on the wig. I want to make the traditional pigtails look and I found a variety of ribbons and threads to use. My current issue is with the dreadlocks. I have a ton of black brushed acrylic yarn that I put aside for later use and I thought I could use it but Corsetkitten's method (water + soap + rolling) is not working. I tried doing something similar but using a bit of white glue in the water, basically making a very liquid mod podge kind of thing and not only does it take forever to make but it also makes the dreadlocks pretty stiff. They're still bendable and the glue doesn't show or anything but it's not exactly what I'm trying to do. So does anyone have suggestions for either a different method for dreadlocks or maybe something else I could do to achieve the cybergoth pigtails look on this wig?

Sent a PM too!

I'm in Quebec, Canada and Monster High is nowhere in any Walmart, there's only a few left at the nearest TRU and it's usually a lot of Treesa, the winged critters, the Winning Werewolves pack and the Vampire Kitchen playset. I've seen one lone Shriekwrecked Gooliope (that I bought) but nothing else.

Customs / Re: Question about commissioning
« on: April 30, 2018, 04:42:54 PM »
In general, if an artist is making a OOAK (One Of A Kind), they won't make a similar one, because it would defeat the purpose of making a OOAK. You might want to "analyze" what it is exactly that you love about that doll and then ask the artist what can be done with those elements. For example, if you like the hair style or a particular colour, I'm sure most artists would be able to use it in a second commission without making it too similar to the first doll.

Labyrinth is my favourite movie ever with The Dark Crystal as a close second and those are amazing! Fizzgig is such a nice touch too, I love that angry little ball of fluff! 💜

Monster Discussion / Body change between G1 and G2?
« on: April 22, 2018, 05:42:21 PM »
I only have 2 dolls that are post-reboot, all of the others I have are pre-reboot and I just realized something. One of those dolls is Gooliope and she didn't change at all from her Freak du Chic release from what I can see but Moanica has a completely different body than the other girls. The back curve, the thickness of the's pretty much a EAH body at this point? Since I don't have any other standard-sized G2 dolls to compare I don't know if the other girls have been given that same new body or if it's just a Moanica thing but I am so disappointed - a lot of the bracelets/wrist cuffs from the G1 girls don't fit her: I tried to put Astranova's cuffs on her and it wouldn't go, there was no way to put back her hands with the cuffs on. I know the dolls now have certain molded features like Clawdeen's fur, Cleo's bandages or Venus's vines but have the rest of their body really changed that much (especially the waist size/back curve)?

Monster Discussion / Re: When did G1 end for you?
« on: April 16, 2018, 07:44:15 AM »
Looking back, I think 2015 was the year it all went downhill. Except for a few dolls and lines, the rest was a lot more "basic" and cute (Geek Shriek, Ghoul Fair, Ghouls' Getaway, Scarnival and GRS for example). Designer Bootique Frankie came out that year, Draculaura was already looking a lot more cutesy than she did originally, and the Frightmares came out too. Mattel reissued the original ghouls as a pack but the vibe of the brand wasn't the same anymore.

Clawdeen's Closet / Re: Requiem's Patterns (4/13: Antique Tea Gown)

You're killing me with those beautiful patterns! I thought I'd wait the end of the month, see if I might win the draw for the free pattern with my April entry but...I couldn't resist and just bought this pattern because the skirt part is perfect for an outfit I've been meaning to make and the dress itself is just so pretty I know I'll be able to use it a lot! 💜

Monster Discussion / Re: What is the “ideal” storage method?
« on: April 04, 2018, 12:37:50 AM »
Plastic bins can be used but there needs to be some ventilation (they can't be air-tight) because if moisture gets trapped in the bins, mold can develop. Cardboard isn't a great option if the dolls are in direct contact with it because depending on your cardboard (how it was made, where it comes from, etc), there could be chemicals so you need to wrap your dolls in acid-free tissue paper if you use cardboard (which is also why some never unboxed dolls still get damaged, because most cardboards aren't a safe long-term option).

The biggest thing, especially with MH dolls, is that you shouldn't store them touching each other, because they can transfer colours, so there should always be a protective layer between each doll (I have a Catrine who was stored with a Lorna before I bought it, leading to colour transfer on her white skin). I don't have enough dolls to need storage yet but I think a good solution could be those fabric clothing drawers/storage case that you can slide under your bed or whatever. I was looking at some on IKEA and they have screen vents in the corners to allow air circulation and they're designed to protect clothing from dust so it would definitely work for dolls. Plus, it keeps the dolls away from direct lighting that could damage them too.

What are anxiolytics, what do they help with?

They're anti-anxiety meds! I've been on clonazepam (Rivotril) since I was 16 because it's strong and long-lasting so I take a very small dose usually twice a day, and the same small dose when I have a panic attack. Since it's also a muscle relaxant (as are other benzodiazepines), it helps with my various cramps and spasms. The downside is that benzodiazepines are considered addictive drugs and so they're highly controlled and hard to get off from. Even after 10 years on them, I still had a doctor who limited my quantity of pills in a month, ultimately making my anxiety worse because I didn't know if I would have enough in case of panic attacks. But as I said, it depends on your level of anxiety, number of panic attacks and what your doctor recommends, because some antidepressants do a better job at controlling anxiety in the long run - I just personally need a quick solution when panic rises or else I have complete nervous breakdowns very easily (due to other conditions).

From someone who lives with severe anxiety and daily panic attacks, this sounds a lot like stress. You might be tensing up your muscles without even realizing it, putting a lot of stress on them and now they're rebelling. My own shoulders and neck are constantly cramped and I do get a fair amount of chest/breast pains that feel like one of my organs is failing or something and the more I freak out about it, the more it hurts. You mentioned you get cluster headaches - are they really cluster or more like migraines? Because stress causes migraines but cluster headaches are more "mysterious" in terms of what causes them and I know that cramped/tensed up muscles in your shoulders and necks can lead to migraines (which I experience fairly often too). In any case, magnesium is a good idea, we have some at home for my mother and I and the pharmacist said it was good for a lot of things, from migraines to muscle cramps.

Seeing a doctor can't hurt and I know saying it won't make it happen but you shouldn't worry. You said yourself that you're nervous, terrified, anxious - it all sounds like typical anxiety and it can definitely affect you physically as well as mentally. Personally, when I get too anxious, my body shuts down and I have all sorts of pains, chronic conditions flare ups, etc. I'm sorry I don't really have anything concretely reassuring to say, I'm not a doctor but I think I can understand what you're going through and I really hope your doctor will be able to reassure you. Usually when there is something seriously wrong, doctors are able to tell with tests and since you had a lot of them done when you went to the ER, if you had anything like cancer, they would have found something. If you want, you could try Tylenol Muscle Aches & Body Pain, which is basically a stronger/extended relief version of Tylenol Extra Strength, see if it helps at all with your pains. And depending on what your doctor recommend, you could maybe check to see if mild anxiolytics could help? I've had mine for 10 years now and I don't think I could function without them (and my other meds), but it really depends on your levels of anxiety/number of panic attacks and if your doctor thinks it's a good idea.

Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows was one of my favourite movie/mini-series as a child, I watched it over and over again! Your Anne is beautiful, I love her faceup, her dress is lovely and that hat is perfect, I love it!
