Iíve seen people use heat guns to reshape feet, but given itís a different material than the head, it might not work. I was hoping it might if settings were changed around and timing was worked out. Thanks for the tip! Iíll keep it in mind for the future, and I know I have dolls with wonky hands that need fixing.

Iíve definitely seen Dollightfulís video on it, Iím mostly worried about my color-matching abilities so I was hoping to use the original ears if at all possible (Catrine is going to be my first victim, so I donít think itíll be an issue getting it to match!) I did try using the back and side of a straightener to apply heat and force it down, but it ended up melting the doll a little, even with my efforts to protect it, oops!

I cut the ears off and am hoping to secure them in the folded position with wire, fill in the gaps with clay/apoxie sculpt/something, and smooth and color everything for a seamless transition.

I loved, loved, loved the video!  I was even so inspired that I bought the Faber Castell eraser pencils.  What a brilliant idea!  That should help a lot.  Iíve been away from customizing and selling for a while, but Iím hoping to get started again next month.

Thanks so much for posting the video!
Iím so honored that I could inspire you, thank you so much! What an incredible compliment! Hopefully you stay motivated, Iíd love to see what you come up with!

I wanted to alter the shape of Catrineís ears and was curious if anyone had success with projects of that nature. Ideally, Iíd get the ears to look like those of a Scottish Fold, but was unsure if a heat gun would yield good results (without impacting the rest of the head) or if it would be best to just make new ears out of something else and cut off the old ones. Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks so much Bweis13!

I forgot to update this thread with the finished doll; it's currently in the mail and arriving tomorrow, so I'm very excited to watch my friend open it on video call. Live reactions are the best!

I need to work on the video, editing is such a pain though! I'll post the video here once it's all finished and uploaded.

Clawdeen's Closet / Re: Sewing machine eating fabric, help?

You probably also need to swap your needle. Stretch fabrics require a ball needle instead of a point. The points of a regular needle can snag on the knits instead of cutting through, which pushes them into your feed dog. A ball needle will slide into the gaps in the stretch/knit material, instead.

Oh thank you! Thatís not anything that would have crossed my mind. I should be near a Joann on Friday and Iíll grab some then.

Clawdeen's Closet / Sewing machine eating fabric, help?
« on: December 05, 2018, 08:23:01 PM »
So as the title states, my sewing machine is eating my fabric and Iíve had to resort to handstitching doll outfits. It seems to only be fabrics with stretch in them, the jeans I sewed were fine, but the jacket I made with a knit fabric was constantly eaten. Iíve looked for tips online and followed them as much as I could, like I switched to a straight stitch presser foot and I got some tissue paper to put under the fabric, then I tried with a beanie later (a kind of stretchy polyester I think?) and it was good for a few slow stitches and then one random stitch caused the whole machine to go crazy and lock up, ruining the fabric. I figured Iíd ask for assistance in here since tips would be more specialized for small scale sewing. Thanks for any advice!

Working on my next project, which is going to be a Christmas gift for a friend! Did my first reroot and I'm pleased with how nice the yarn turned out.

Just looking at the hair gives me pastel goth vibes, but I'm not sure what I want to do with the doll's face; I'll have to look through their aesthetic stuff and come up with something. I'm open to suggestions as well! I'm probably going to give her black lips, and I'd like to incorporate teal (eye color or eye makeup maybe?) but not sure on anything else. Blacked out scleras, a third eye on the forehead, something creepy and cute!

My roommate has been super supportive of my repainting, and for my birthday he got me Kala and Clawdia dolls. I'm really moved by it, it was so sweet of him to do for me.

Off Topic / Re: Don't do that to my customs!

Ugh, it just happened again. Someone messaged me, complimented my "beautiful" doll (the one in my avatar actually) then asked how much extra it would cost to make the lips bright red, add blush, and polish the fingers and toes. I informed her I was only selling as-is but if she wanted to commission me and have full creative control, we could work something out (and of course, didn't get a response to that). I legitimately don't understand why someone would request I change my art, especially after they just said that they think it's beautiful. Honestly if it was just the polish, I'd probably have done it (that's not something I'd be worried about lowering the value on the doll should they back out), but I'm not wanting to mess with the face after I've sealed and glossed it. Those lips would end up being a hot mess.
I'm not upset that no one's buying the dolls after I put so much work into them, I'm just frustrated that all that work isn't enough, and someone would rather have me change my vision than actually pay me fairly for exactly what they want.

Our internet kept going out and we finally found out we have a rodent problem, and they keep chewing up our cables, so it took forever to get to a location where I could get the videos uploaded. I'm staggering them today, Thorn is up now and Luna is scheduled for 6:15 PT if I remember correctly. I won't have wi-fi until at least Nov 1st, but I hope you enjoy the videos in my absence!

Thank you for the support everyone!

I wont be able to get the clothes done by the end of the month unfortunately, but I did at least finish the small accessories I wanted to do.

For the time being, they're complete! If you're at all interested in the process, I'm trying to start a Youtube channel for my repaints, and kicking it off with this project. I've only just finished Dusk's video, and I'll have to really work hard to get the other two done by Halloween. Wish me luck!

Rules & Regs! / Name change please?

Iíd love to get renamed to Sweet Bats if at all possible. Thanks in advance!

Just about done! Wanting to add a few last touches to them, then see if I can make their clothes before the end of the month. Excited!!!

And Dusk is effectively done!

Made her some little earrings, which were a pain. Colors aren't sticking super well to Luna's lips or Thorn's eyes, so I may need to switch to paints for those. Only paints I used on Dusk were the liner and catchlights, and only because it was blending in with the black pastels. IMO it still looks really soft, not sure what I'm doing wrong to not get bold lines. Oh well, still very happy with her! I just wish her wig fit a little better, I might be able to fiddle with it a bit more to get it just right though.

Looking good, Simply!

The orange is awesome, could make a great Leeloo from The Fifth Element....
I was kinda thinking that as I made it!

Are they the Hex Girls?!
You got it! I'm glad someone recognized them!

First layer of colors on Dusk

I wanted to keep it kind of pale and not add blush or anything, but looking at the picture I can see that contouring with a bit of green will really help. Will have to add that on the next layer, as well as darken the eyes. She and Luna have black eyes but I'm probably going to make them brown; unfortunately this light brown I used as a base turned out really orange and I'm not liking it. I'm not a huge fan of the "no eyebrow" look, but I'm also not a fan of drawing eyebrows, so I guess it kinda works out.

All three wigs finished, barring minor touchups. Hopefully it's easier to determine who they're supposed to be now. I'm most proud of the orange one! Pleasantly surprised with how nice it turned out without straightening the wefts and manipulating the yarn for volume.
After work today (or if it's slow enough during) I'm going to clean my craft desk up a lot and see about getting a better filming setup for when I start the faces tonight. For now, Clawdeen's getting her MSC treatment!

Few more updates!

Operetta post-Dremel. I'm not super happy with how it turned out, I need a lot more practice, but I did a bit more and got some sandpaper to smooth it out a bit more after this picture. It isn't perfect but it's hopefully not going to be super noticeable, especially with the wig on.

They need a tad bit more styling, but these two wigs are pretty much done!

Started on the third wig, it's gonna be pretty poofy and I'm hoping I can make it work. I didn't straighten the wefts, so it's all just brushed out yarn with no heat, I'm hoping it works in my favor but it's tricky!
