Monster Discussion / Re: New dolls! Rainy Day dolls
« on: Yesterday at 10:36:59 AM »
Aw, I love their little raincoats but no articulation is a total deal-breaker for me...I might buy the clothes and accessories separately though!

Also, I don't know how many people can read French so here's the translation:

"Lagoona, Venus Mcflytrap or Ari Hauntington in multicoloured dresses and high heels are ready to face rainy days with the cape, the umbrella and the boots they carry with them. A doll set that includes two pairs of shoes, a handbag, an umbrella and a rain cape."

Oh she definitely wears it because she likes it too but I love giving explanations as to why my characters do or like certain things. For example, Margot, my puppet OC, absolutely despise Physical Deaducation, not because she hates sports but because it's really hard for her to keep her balance and run with knee joints that can bend backwards! Sybil, another one of my OC, is very vain and has an obsession with painting autoportraits, which comes from being the daughter of Dorian Gray (she's frenemies with Amanita, because they're both convinced they're just so beautiful and great). My characters are always very detailed and I want them to fit in properly with the universe so I do a lot of research and such to make sure they make sense in the MH universe.

Thank you both for your answers!

I'm not Muslim myself but I've always been fascinated by the practice of covering one's head for religious purposes and I've done a lot of research on the subject (I'm passionate about theology and mythology, I read religious texts just like someone would read a novel ^^"). The OC could have been from anywhere but I'm making a long-haired werecat girl with white fur, which lead to the Turkish Angora cat and then to making an OC from Turkey. While I've seen all sorts of fashion trends when researching Turkish culture and traditions, I fell in love with the elegance and beauty of several outfits worn with hijabs (I think it's been called "Muslim Chic"?). And then I just knew it was a challenge I had to take on, because I love diversity in representation and while Monster High is originally aimed at kids/preteens, as an adult I have a more...I don't know how to explain it, a desire to have something bigger? Like how I don't headcanon all the characters as straight and cisgender for example (although I won't get into that much either to avoid conflict).

Folklore isn't clear on what are werecats unlike werewolves, they don't necessarily transform at any particular time and most tales talk of witches and sorcerers, shamans or even priests turning into felines of various sizes but we know the Monster High werecats aren't any of those things, they're just cat-girls, so I think I might sort of go with both explanations: Kadri wears a headscarf as a cultural symbol and as a practical thing to avoid getting her fur in a tangle since she's long-haired? Catrine, Catty, Toralei, Meowlody and Purrsephone have been seen with long hair but they seem to be short-haired cats as far as body goes while I imagine my Kadri as having a fluffy tail, fluffy ears and a fluffy head of white fur. I might give her some more fur depending on how these areas go (I'm waiting for my wefts to dry right now before I start putting them on the doll) but she'll definitely be more hairy than the other werecats.

I don't want to start any sort of debate or controversy and I know religion is a very sensitive subject and I also know we're supposed to avoid it as per the rules so if this goes wrong, I'm fully aware this thread will disappear. It's just that I'm making an OC who is going to wear a headscarf because she comes from a mostly Muslim country and it fits with her character and everything (also headscarves are beautiful).

Thing is, I don't particularly like the idea of weaving religion into this universe and I'm looking for a different reason she might want to wear a head covering. The only reasons I've encountered were religious (not only Muslim of course, a lot of religions have or had some sort of head coverings) and since there aren't any monsters wearing some sort of symbol like this, I'm struggling to find a way to make this believable (which ultimately doesn't matter because she's my OC and not an actual character but I'm a perfectionist x-x).

I mean, the monsters from other countries wear traditional fashion (Jinafire's fashion is very Chinese-inspired, Skelita wears a lot of Mexican clothing, Batsy's style is reminiscent of Costa Rica, Lorna is obviously Scottish, etc), but none of them has religious symbols I think, except maybe Skelita's shrines to her ancestors but I'm not sure if that enters in the realm of tradition or religion. For a little more information, she's a Turkish werecat girl from "Istanboo", she's a fashionata and she's very proud of her culture (think Jinafire and Skelita in Scaris, talking about their country and family and traditions, etc), I just don't know how to explain her headscarf without getting religious?

I love reading everyone's answers because every time I go look up the dolls and I'm like "Oh yeah, that one looks great too"!

I seam-rip my own clothes too to make patterns! I saw Dollightful doing it and I was like "That is genius why didn't I think of this?" which is why I keep all the clothes of each dolls carefully labelled until I need them for patterns!

The HtC dresses are so beautiful, they're so intricate and the accessories are so lovely! My favourite is definitely Frankie, she almost look like she borrowed some of Cleo's clothes!

Catty has a 13 Wishes version? I thought the long flowing pink dress was her signature doll? Now I'm confused! But yes, I agree, that dress is gore-geous and it's my favourite Catty doll even though I don't have it yet!

The Gloom & Bloom line is just so pretty! Then again I have a thing for flowers so of course I'd be in love with a line full of them! When you say Dawn of the Dance, do you mean the Zombie Shake? Because I don't think Meowlody and Purrsephone have DotD dolls, but their 2-pack Zombie Shake looks pawsitively fangtastic!

Clawdeen's style is so versatile, I think she can pull off pretty much any outfit and hairstyle and still look killer because even in doll form she looks confident!

I'd never heard of the Picnic Casket 2-pack so I looked it up and OMR, they both look so good! I love their little cardigans, I might need to add that pack to my wishlist!

Are there any colour match for FdC Twyla? I've tried looking up many dolls but none of them look quite the same tone as her...Even the other Twyla dolls all seem to have a slightly different skin hue!

Clawdeen's Closet / Favourite MH outfits?

Even though I sew my own clothes (thread coming soon), I love the official Monster High outfits even though the quality is sometimes...questionable and the shoes need some jazzing up. Since I often choose which doll I want based on the outfit they come with, I was wondering what's everyone's favourite official outfits?

Mine would be Gala Ghoulfriends Elle Eedee, Dawn of the Dance Clawdeen Wolf, Freak Du Chic Twyla, Fusion-Inspired Ghouls Ghoulia Yelps, Hauntlywood Operetta, Ghouls Rule Draculaura, Gloom and Bloom Catrine DeMew, I Love Shoes Draculaura, Zomby Gaga, Monster Exchange Lagoona Blue, Scaris: City of Frights Ghoulia Yelps, Nautical Ghouls Dayna Treasura Jones, Wave 4 Rochelle Goyle, Swim Class Lagoona Blue & Swim Class Rochelle Goyle! That was longer than I thought it'd be  And you can see which dolls' styles come back the most (Ghoulia, Draculaura, Lagoona and Rochelle mostly)!

I did a double-check and tried to trade Lorna's and even Kjersti's arms with Twyla's broken ones to see what she would look like with different coloured ones and...I think Twyla is more broken than I thought? I'll probably need to take a drill to her upper arms because neither Lorna's nor Kjersti's arm pegs fit in Twyla, even though they're all on the little sister body type? It looks like her arm holes were made a lot smaller than the others, probably another example of bad quality control...I'll tweak around until I can make other arms fit before taking you up on the offer for Howleen's arms - I think I could make a cool character with prosthetic arms but if they don't even fit, that would be a waste!

My Freak du Chic Twyla came with awful elbow joints, one of them was molded wrong, plain and simple, and the peg on the other one is crooked, making her look incredibly awkward because her arms sit at an angle sort of...back from their original position. I live in Canada and contacted Mattel, who (finally) answered that they have no replacement parts, nor a replacement doll to send. Because I'm curious, I went on the US part store instead of choosing Canada and lo and behold, there's a pair of replacement arms for Freak du Chic Twyla. Problem is, I can't buy it from Canada and apparently either Mattel Canada doesn't have access to those parts, either they just don't care. Any idea what I can do? I even looked on Ebay but haven't seen a single Twyla arm and I'm not sure I want to buy another Twyla (who knows if her arms will even be right!).

Fabric glue, tiny elastic bands, and a bunch of bargain fabric because I finally have a clear idea of what a few of my dolls should wear!

@Kara Zor-El
Thank you so much for this! I'm not going to do the job myself because I don't have any of the required materials right now but that is super helpful! My doll is probably going to be mostly for display so I'm not too worried about the joints rubbing off - once she's done, she'll be posed in her set (I'm making her a diorama set to stay into) and that will be it since I don't want to damage her in any way. In any case, if I ever decide to try it myself, this is really informative!

Since I just started actually collecting, I don't really have anything to trade yet (I'm even missing some things instead of having spares!)...As for the shoes, do you have pictures? I usually repaint the shoes myself because there are so many details but very little colours so I make them pop!

I haven't seen all the movies yet because they're not all on Netflix Canada and they never aired on the channels I have but so far my favourite is definitely Haunted, the ghost students are some of my favourites ever and seeing them all in the same movie was awesome! Plus the Haunted dolls are absolutely lovely 💜

Oh! Oh dear! I reblogged some of your art on my MH Tumblr, I'm in absolutely love with how you drew Amanita! I might have to get some of your adorable badges for my bag, are you planning on any more characters in the future?

Added a specific request: nude budget doll so I can have a subject to model the clothes and accessories I sew! No clothes, accessories or even hands needed, she'll be wiped clean of her paint and her hair will be removed to model wigs as well. As long as she has two legs, arms to the wrists and a head, it'll work. No tails, fins or wings preferred since it's harder to work around those.

The winds must be pretty harsh in the Prairies with all the flat ground! It's been -30 over here too but that's with the wind.

I'm planning to make some traditional Scandinavian clothing (I need to research bunad designs and find which region I'd rather go with) for Kjersti as well as heavy outerwear and probably at least one Viking-inspired outfit but her daily clothing is still going to be gamer fashion because I like to stay true to the characters. Right now she's wearing a pyjama like all of my dolls though!

I saw them online actually, I never really go out, especially not in big stores because I'm agoraphobic so I prefer shopping online ~ Amazon often recommends me different dolls since I browse MH a lot and I saw a 3-pack of the retro dolls featuring Strawberry Shortcake, Lime Chiffon and Lemon Meringue. I think my favourite thing about these dolls is that they're scented, I have a big thing for nice smells 💗

Technically I have Asperger's, or at least it was the initial diagnosis but it seems I have "symptoms" that hint at something else on the spectrum (like severe age regression and a stunted emotional growth) so I usually just say I'm autistic since it's less complicated ^^"

I love Ontario, it's such a nice province with so many places to see! I'm a big fan of EAH but I never quite fell in love with the dolls, I think it's their shape and the width of their head. Strawberry Shortcake dolls are so cute, I saw the retro ones from the early 80's and I nearly bought them, they were my favourites!
I don't really go shopping anywhere but I do love buying secondhand dolls, I love giving them a new life with me! I think my first faceup will be Kjersti, she's absolutely precious but her pixelated eyes really bother me so I'm going to carefully cover her pretty hair and redo her face when I have the proper supplies and the weather for it (it's really, really cold over here right now and I don't have a workshop so Mr. Super Clear would freeze on her face like little specks of snow x-x it's also pretty much always humid so I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do).

First things first: I'm in Canada, I'm willing to buy anywhere given that I have the budget for it (sometimes I won't but if you're willing to wait a bit, I always make room for dolls and doll stuff) and I do not care about boxes at all. I prefer having the original clothes and shoes but I can do without accessories (though some are really cool so it depends) and stands, since I redress and keep my dolls in my bed. I also don't particularly care about light stains or messy hair since most if not all of my dolls are going to be customized in some way. Also if you sell your own creations for clothes and accessories and even doll-sized objects, feel free to message me, I want to build a huge wardrobe/playground for my dolls! Without further ado, here's the list!

I don't really want the dolls but I absolutely love the clothes so if you happen to have a doll whose clothes you're willing to part with, here's the ones I'm looking for. Note that I'd like the shoes as well but in most cases, accessories are not necessary (unless mentioned):

I'm going to think of something and try to see if I can get a secondhand doll with a pale-ish complexion for the puppet, I might already have an idea for a water nymph of some sort, I have leftover miniature fake pearls cabochons from a mask project I worked on a while ago that I could carefully glue on her skin, and a bunch of miniature seashells and stuff...In any case, she's going to be great! Thanks everyone for the info and the advice, I might invest in an airbrush gun one day but it's a bit early to buy something so expensive when I'm not even sure I'll be able to do my own repaints ^^"

For the peg repair, you know the little plastic bits at the wrists, elbows and (I think) knees where you can pop the pieces off and on? That's the peg. There's a lot of different methods depending on how it's broken and where but for Honey's hand peg, I cut a small piece of the end of a bobby pin, carved a slit in the original mechanism, inserted the bobby pin in the slit with glue and then popped it back into the wrist socket. The little round bit of plastic at the end of the bobby pin works pretty much exactly like the original peg!
