Monster Discussion / Re: Overproduced characters/dolls

Venus has way too many dolls for someone who barely has any character outside of the Ghoulfriends books. I mean I love her in the Ghoulfriends books but none of that carries over into the movies/episodes. And I'm getting tired of Catty too, again for someone who barely has a character.

And yes, add me to the Too Much Draculaura and Clawdeen camp. I swear I think Mattel had a contest last year to see how many line they could forcibly shove those two into, I was like "Enough already!"

Monster Discussion / Re: Bad Tomb-Mates (bad webisode)

Gawd, Frankie, you weren't born yesterday. The "why can't we be friends?" shtick doesn't work when the answer is "because you left me and my family to rot in a tomb".

Did they change the writing team for the webisodes? Because these last few ones have been absolutely terrible.

I've noticed a writing quality dip overall in MH since the beginning of 2014 and it's only gotten worse. I wanted to cry over how utterly stupidly they wrote Frankie in this episode because she's one of my favorites and I hate what they're doing to her character. And honestly the only character who hasn't suffered any major regression in that time has been Cleo.

So someone on the creative team must really love Cleo. Which is great! But they need to show all the characters that same love.

I really think the MH writing team could use some fan input when it comes to plotting and characterization because I've seen some fans come up with some really smartly written stuff that just makes the official stuff pale in comparison. This isn't a question of "oh but it's for kids", this is a question of laziness.

Monster Discussion / Re: Dolls You Just Can't Like?

I've tried so hard but I just cannot like any of Clawd's dolls. :( He looks nothing like he does in the webisodes and movies, his eyes look dead and they stare off into space, and what Mattel sticks on there as "facial hair" is pathetic. Also he's far too skinny and lanky, he should have had a mold like Manny's but shorter in height. But I guess like putting Abbey on the big sister mold or Draculaura on the little sister mold, they can't do anything about it now.

Monster Discussion / Re: Freak du Chic and Ghoul Fair

Do we have an exact date?

I believe Freak du Chic, along with Boo York, will be released in June. My question is do we know if FdC will be a store exclusive, like to Target or something, or will it be everywhere?

Clawdeen should not be portrayed by a white girl in official material. Ever.

I am going to politely but strongly disagree with this statement. While I agree that it was unwise to portray all characters with white looking people in this video, it would be even worse if they banned certain races from portraying certain characters. Give me a Korean Clawdeen, a Portuguese Clawdeen, a Samoan Clawdeen. Any and all girls should be able to portray the characters they like without being judged on their race.

Why? Why does an obviously racially coded black character ever need to be portrayed by someone of a different race in official material? It's not "banning" races from a character, she is clearly meant to be seen as black. Like someone else mentioned, her skin is dark, it's canon that's not just her fur... so why is it okay to take that away from her and just give her a random race for no reason?

Complaining about whitewashing has NOTHING to do with shaming white girls. I am white myself. We get plenty of attention in media. POC do not. You shouldn't be thinking of white girls in this scenario, you should think of the little black girls who could see themselves in Clawdeen, who probably loved to see their skin color in such an important main character when there are white characters everywhere for everyone else, only to have her reduced to a white actress, again, for no good reason.

Amen to this. There's nothing wrong with a little white girl wanting to be Clawdeen for Halloween or a white girl cosplaying Clawdeen at a convention. But this is an official video put out by Mattel, the official company. They should have known better. This is basically them saying they don't recognize their own poc characters as poc after all, or recognizing that so many little black girls look up to Clawdeen and see themselves in her. And that's the issue and it's serious.

Monster Discussion / Re: Deluxe Draculaura?

The face is actually what makes me want her most. She looks so sad and anguished. Perfect contrast to the generically pleased look of the regular dolls.

That's exactly how I feel! It's a shame so many people don't like her face, I think it's very endearing. Such a contrast to how preppy and sort of annoying she can be sometimes. I really hope this means her special diary she comes with reveals some darkness in her past, like G&B Cleo's did.

I've never been so excited for a Draculaura doll before, she looks absolutely stunning! I truly hope this means they have more characters planned for this collector's lineup because I am all ready to hand over my wallet for a Cleo and Frankie deluxe edition.

Ghoul Fair is cute, but I think the only one I would buy on the spot is Heath, only because if I see a boy doll in stores I have to buy him because I know I'll never see him again.

Freak du Chic is the one that's going to break me--my bank account that is. There isn't a bad one in the line, they all look so spectacular! Honey and Frankie are a for sure. It looks like they actually rooted more hair into Frankie's head so her curls will actually hold this time (unlike the utter disappointment that was her Fusion-Inspired last year). Honey is as usual completely glamorous, and her marionette motif has kind of this underlying creepiness to it that I love. Toralei and Jinafire, two characters I've never been particularly partial to, are knocking it out of the park as well. Man this is going to be hard, I might actually have to get this entire line!

Gloom and Bloom Cleo from Target. While I mostly got her for her outfit, I wanted her even more for her diary.

Brilliant backstory is brilliant

I'm feeling so overwhelmed by all of this awesomeness! June is going to be a very bad month for my bank account between Boo York and Freak du Chic. I'll definitely be picking up Cleo/Deuce and Nefera, and I think Elle EeDee has completely won me over.

OH MY GOD Freak du Chic. That is all. I need Gooliope but at the same time I have no idea where I'm going to put a 17-inch doll. Literally ALL of these dolls are perfection, but since I have to prioritize, Frankie and Honey are definitely coming home with me. These releases are all just incredible, I can't wait!

I currently have somewhere around 30-35 dolls, most bought new but some discontinued dolls bought secondhand.

Ohh, my absolute fav, that's a tough one. I think right now it's Sweet Screams Frankie, she's SO gorgeous. Although that will probably change, there's some upcoming dolls that might become my favs, Boo York and Freak du Chic to name a couple.

Hey guys and ghouls! I've been collecting Monster High for about two years now, but only just now decided to get in on the awesome forum all the cool kitties are on. I'm 26 years old and live in a bitty town in southeast Michigan, US. I finished school in 2012 and am currently working full time as a receptionist.

So what on earth made me get into MH you might ask? Well I'm a huge nerd, lover of fantasy and the supernatural, fun storytelling and good characters. To me Monster High seemed to have the whole package so here I am today! The characters I love and collect the most of include Cleo, Frankie and Abbey, Jackson/Holt for the guys, and Robecca for the secondary characters (the B-Team as I call her, Venus and Rochelle). But the sheer level of detail, quality and beauty of the dolls is what drew my eye to them, even a couple years before I officially got into MH when I was randomly perusing the toy aisle, and I started collecting. And well, I guess that's about it for now! Looking forward to chatting dolls and MH in general with you guys.
