Customs / Disney Rapunzel Faceup
« on: December 27, 2017, 02:41:08 PM »
Hi everyone! I know I've been dead for a long time, but I felt I owed this amazing community a huge thank you for all of the incredible positivity and support. I was very frustrated at first with the custom doll process, but because every time I posted something I always got helpful tips, compliments, and encouragement without fail, I kept tackling this hobby until I started to get somewhere.

I took a huge involuntary break because of full time work, but over the holidays finally managed to finish a 15" doll. I don't have a new name for her yet but I was thinking I ought to give her a little holster, pistol, and belt, in the spirit of having just binged Godless on Netflix

Here is her after about a month of struggling with her hair. I did everything under the sun but could not save the beautiful, floor length tinsel adorned hair I found her with, once upon a time in a consignment sale bin. I tried so hard, but in the end had to chop at least half of it off.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Aaand here is a gradual progression of all the layers.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

And then the near + final thing, with some adjustments to her hair.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Here's to hoping many more follow!

Sightings / Craigslist!
« on: January 03, 2017, 08:45:30 PM »
I've been seeing some postings around me that may be of interest to people, I buy quite a number of my dolls/furniture off of Craigslist so I wouldn't mind being the middle woman. Or just list these as sightings and maybe people can work it out with the seller for shipping? Either way, not sure how we should go about organizing this, but I guess I'll start with a basic template.

My location: Panorama City, CA
Willing to drive: Pretty much anywhere within LA depending on my schedule
Listings around me (1/23/17):
(Admin Edit - links removed - CV)
If anyone's interested I suppose we could use paypal, and I could pick up the dolls/ship, possibly with a tiny fee for driving? Feel free to throw out suggestions!

Customs / Sealing layers and wait time
« on: November 29, 2016, 02:05:55 AM »
Hello all, just had a question about sealing:

How long do you normally wait for a coat of MSC to dry after you've sealed a layer of paint?

This is assuming you've already done the regular 2-3 coats as primer and waited 24 hours for that to cure, then went ahead and did your very first layer of pastel blush/feature sketches. Now you want to seal it before you do another layer to darken and add more colors. How long would you recommend waiting for each coat of MSC to dry?

I read in one of the provided FAQ threads that people wait anywhere between 20 min to 24 hours per coat, but I was wondering if you would wait that long in the middle of doing a face up. I was also wondering if using brush on sealer (like liquitex) and an airbrush would reduce drying time, since it's basically like a layer of paint.

Thoughts? Tips? Would greatly appreciate!

Customs / Bunnibun's Customs Progress Tracker
« on: November 24, 2016, 12:29:49 AM »
Hey all, just another doll lover getting into the big, big world of customs! I got all of my supplies ready and have begun doing some basic things like rerooting and sanding. I thought it would be a good idea to track my own progress, so that's all this thread is really for. It's cool to see one's humble beginnings, and also a good way to lend a bit of positivity when I inevitably feel stuck or inept somewhere down the road.

And this is indeed a very, very humble beginning. My main focus has been sanding, since for me I think it will be the most time consuming and pain staking without all the fun parts, like adding gloss or a bit of lace  I started with the handless Lagoona body I had recently purchased from galaxy's sales (thank you Jason you rock  ^.^), and you can't quite see but I screwed up to the point where I had to stop. Stupidly I used some acetone on one leg to experiment and it turned the tiny crack at the top of the thigh seam into an ugly, gaping nightmare. I also wasn't removing seams right, shaving instead of rubbing, and it got bad enough to the point that I made myself put it down, lol.

My second attempt on a Twyla I received from the ever lovely Queen of Kawaii went much better. Managed a passable job, although if you look really close you can see faint traces of seams, a white mark right on her butt from when my knife stabbed the plastic, and scratch marks from the sandpaper. Man, did I go through a lot of sandpaper.

Included an unsanded 13 wishes Twyla for comparison:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

And last but not least, I can't resist publicly gushing over these amaaaaaaaaaaazing handmade outfits made by none other than The Queen of Kawaii herself. Look at them, just look at them!! I'm so in love. (Also you can see the poor Lagoona body I botched)

flrgherkjghdjfkgre they are just the most darling things ever. I feel so lucky. Did I mention how adorable they are? She has an etsy shop as well so if you'd like to snag some yourself... ;)

Well that's all for now. I'll be adding pics now and then, hopefully with a rerooted Twyla head next, or possibly a sanded Clawdeen body. And then after that it's onto faceups!

Wanted / Looking for Novi Stars Doe A. Deer!
« on: November 05, 2016, 01:11:17 AM »
UPDATE 11/10: I'm urgently seeking Novi Stars Doe A. Deer. Doesn't appear to be anywhere on the web, even evilbay. Does anyone happen to know where they might be sold, or has access to a second hand/consignment store that may still carry old stock of these? If you do please let me know!

Original post:
I've looked everywhere and cannot find these darned adorable things, so I'm pleading to the lovely folk of MHA. Does anyone have any Pinkie Cooper dolls, Flairies, NoviStars, Disney Animator/Shimmer dolls they are willing to part with? I'm not too interested in NIB mint condition dolls but if you're willing to trade, we can make stuff happen :)

I also have a trade thread up with everything I have to offer + other things on my wishlist, as well as a bunch of other info regarding shipping and stuff. I'm pretty open to possibilities since I've only just begun collecting, so hit me up anytime!

Introductions! / Sup!
« on: November 03, 2016, 10:30:41 PM »
Hey, my name is Jin, I'm 26, and I'm studying entertainment art (concept art, storyboarding, animation, cgi, that kind of thing) in North Hollywood, California

I've always loved dolls, as I know is the same for everyone on this lovely site, but when BJD's first got big I was still in high school and had $0. But after many years of struggling my way into adulthood, I now have the time and funds to pursue this little hobby. BJD's are still way out of my budget, but fortunately MH dolls are not! I stumbled across them recently and fell instantly in love. I adore their facial structures, their colors, their entire concept. I haven't started yet but my supplies are on their way and I'll be diving into faceups very soon. At long last, my dream will come true!

All in all, I'm super excited to be here. I'll be PMing lots of you I'm sure in the coming hours to purchase some dolls, and I'll be sure to have a wishlist/trade thread up soon as well. So happy to be in a place with fellow doll lovers. Here's to good times ahead!
