Hi everyone! I know I've been dead for a long time, but I felt I owed this amazing community a huge thank you for all of the incredible positivity and support. I was very frustrated at first with the custom doll process, but because every time I posted something I always got helpful tips, compliments, and encouragement without fail, I kept tackling this hobby until I started to get somewhere.

I took a huge involuntary break because of full time work, but over the holidays finally managed to finish a 15" doll. I don't have a new name for her yet but I was thinking I ought to give her a little holster, pistol, and belt, in the spirit of having just binged Godless on Netflix

Here is her after about a month of struggling with her hair. I did everything under the sun but could not save the beautiful, floor length tinsel adorned hair I found her with, once upon a time in a consignment sale bin. I tried so hard, but in the end had to chop at least half of it off.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Aaand here is a gradual progression of all the layers.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

And then the near + final thing, with some adjustments to her hair.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Here's to hoping many more follow!

Ahh awesome, thank you!

Thank you both so much!

So work has left me totally pooped, leaving my doll practice to be on indefinite hiatus >_< but I did get to tinkering a bit over these past few weeks. Mostly it's been rescue work, swooping dolls from grubby little children's hands at consignment stores to take home and restore  ^^; Much of it is hair conditioning, but I did manage to snag a cheap, nude Anna doll that was fully articulated. Then I stuck on a Lonnie head and it....well, actually it works pretty nicely! I wish I had really before pics, cause Ariel's hair was crazy, but alas, I never manage to think that far ahead.

When I came home super beat, I decided I ought to do something simple and fun. A lot of my dolls are just sitting around nude, which probably looks super weird to a non-doll fanatic, so I figured I should dress one or two for the hell of it.

(Moments) Before:

And after!

Aaaaand of course you know you aren't a true doll lover if you don't take at least 14938503498603 more pictures..

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

You can definitely see the difference in skin tone for the Lonnie franken, but oh well it's close enough. As for Ariel, I think I have a minor obsession with her and her gorgeous hair, because I have 3 exact same ariel dolls and I don't even mind. This one I dressed to look like one of my co-workers, Katie, because she has ariel-red hair and wears pretty much the exact same blue jacket  :P

I've also been trying to drink a La Dee Da head, which was such a grave mistake. All that beautiful hair...

Plenty of pics to come for that update, to be sure. Until next time. Keep on rockin' guys and gals!

So I found all three of these gals at a local toys r us a few days ago and I was also drawn to Rochelle at first, but then I noticed something strange...

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

The one on the top has great speckles on her face, but ZERO on her right arm and hand. ??

The one on the bottom looks pretty even throughout. Both have wonky lipstick. Go figure...

I kind of like the more speckled face  ^^; I ended up going with the unusual Rochelle, her blank arm intrigues me with possible uses lol.

As promised, here is another progress update, as well as an update on my sales thread!

*note: I am probably going to redo most of the dolls here...but if you happen to like one, I could make her yours for not very much $  ^^;*

So I left off with the dolls looking something like this:

From there I managed to finish this batch and start a second one, but I scrapped Clawdeen's face because I hated everything about it, lol. First off is Kidz Chloe:

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I know for sure now that I a) used too much red on all of their faces and b) go way too dark for my own liking on their eyes. These were good for practice but I will probably wipe all of their faces and redo them at a later date. I did like the tiny bit of chameleon pigment I added to her eyes. Probably did something wrong with the acrylic though cause it was hard as hell to make even coats.

Next is Kidz Jade:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

As you can see in the first picture, I was too liberal with the lip blush and ended up making her look like she'd had a field day with popsicles. So what I ended up doing to fix it was use nail polish remover around her lips and then sand down that whole area to make it more even. There was a lot of sealing in between and adding of more face blush. It took forever and I wanted to cry but in the end it mostly worked. Really a route I would rather never go down again but hey, at least it can be done! Also because of her thick bangs I ended up missing sealant in giant patches on the sides of her forehead. Sigh.

After that comes Kidz Yasmin:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I like how Yasmin turned out a lot more. Style, color, etc. I wish I had rerooted her first though to make her hair purple. Maybe if I'm feeling ballsy one day and do it veeeeerrry carefully I'll be able to pull it off...for now she stays brunette. I was also thinking of added stars inside of her pupils. Version 2.0 perhaps?

I also have started on a Kidz Sasha, who is quickly becoming my favorite so far:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Ye gods, her eyes were so horribly uneven in the beginning. But little by little I managed to force some balance. I made much use of my magnifying glass, as well as some tricks suggested here, like turning her upside down a lot. Also I found that holding up dolls in front of a mirror helps too! She's still very much a WIP though so more progress to come.

Aaaaand these are MH/EAH:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

AAAAGGHH so much bluuuusshh. Why do I go so ham? I don't know...but I must curb myself. It makes me upset and uncomfortable just looking at them. I am most likely going to redo Cedar cause...jeez she is so sunburnt. I have enough Lagoona baits though that I might just make a second version. I think it was because I started with so many dark skin dolls and they require a lot more pigment, which then made me think that all the dolls thereafter needed just as much. No brain, no! Stop!

Ok well that's all for now, I go back to work soon so progress will be greatly hindered, but I'm trying to get as much done as I can in the meantime.

Until next time!

Bump! Loooots more stuff added, as promised ^_^

LOOVE!!

Thank you both! Yes the animals are adorable, which is how they get away with being little d-bags all the time, lol. And yes Mike Judge is awesome, though we don't see him much, he popped in once to say keep up the good work but otherwise kind of a ghost.

I did get a magnifying LED lamp but I think working at night really messes with me, thought I just can't seem to get myself to wake up earlier xD

Something about Spectra's slightly squinty eyes just makes it utterly perfect

Ahh, most excellent advice! I will try and be more diligent with the spraying, I am admittedly sloppy since I just mass spray them assembly line style, so I'm definitely not getting all the little nooks and crannies. Noted and noted. Priceless help as always, and thank you thank you ^__^

Customs / BIG FAT POST
« on: February 08, 2017, 05:56:11 PM »
**disclaimer: this is gonna be one long, spammy post. Buckle in!
Alright guys and gals...are you ready? Because so many weeks of not posting means I've got a whoooole lot of stuff backed up ready to essplode :freak:

First and foremost I was very literally killing myself trying to juggle work, life, and art all at once. The work part was not expected and due to certain delays I now have lots more free time (it's a new upcoming show called Tales from the Tour Bus created by the one and only Mike Judge. It's hilarious!), but I was under the grim mentality I would be unemployed for a while, so I had signed myself up for 12 hours worth of drawing classes. MISTAKE. I was so tired my boss had to pull me aside and ask if I was okay, then forced me to go home on multiple occasions. But I wouldn't give up any of it for the world, so slave away I must.

Once that more or less had settled down, I had an anime convention to attend...and cosplay in. I'll just say I grew up during a time when being into anime and video games was not what the cool kids did, so this is both sort of uncomfortable and liberating at the same time. My boyfriend is younger than me so he has no idea what I'm talking about, but I suppose it's a good thing because now I can embrace my heritage to its fullest. Once I get past the knee-jerk reaction to shun away this part of my life, I actually have tons of fun! For which I am eternally grateful. My ego and pre-conceived notions need a real good kick once in awhile.

Here are some pictures of my very rushed cosplay, one of my ears kept flopping and I had zero sleep all of January, but at least I figured out how to get my battle axe to light up (which of course, I didn't capture in any pictures). We had a group theme of RPG Eeveelutions and I was the axe wielding Sylveon. Pictures to follow:

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Well once the con was done I was pooped. So naturally, I dove straight into mass production of faceups. Good thing I had some animal friends to, uh...not help and sit around eating all day.

This is Milk Tea. She is very sassy and stomps sometimes when other bunnies trespass on her territory. She belongs to my roomie, and she is the most curious, hungry rabbit I've ever met.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

And this is my fat dumb cat, Teemo. She is very fat and not very bright. She also looks sad 100% of the time and lies to everyone with her meows. I feed her and feed her but it makes no difference. In a very cat like fashion, she also enjoys putting her butt where it not only doesn't belong, but doesn't fit as well. BUTT I love her, and against all of our expectations, she and Milk Tea have become hungry hippo buddies.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

So after I managed to shove Teemo off of my works in progress, I finally had the time to do what Dirili had suggested earlier. I used acetone to even out my sanding marks, then lightly went over the bodies again with very fine sandpaper. It worked wonders!! But of course being chicken brained means I forgot to take pictures before I bundled all of my dolls up...promise I'll remedy that in the next round of posting. I'm only about 1/4 done so lots more progress updates to come anyways.

As of right now this is what I've begun to work on:

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Progress update 1:

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Progress update 2:

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

So as always I made lots and lots of mistakes along the way. They are as follows:

-Didn't make sure their faces were free of debris and random specks in between sealant layers, so ended up having to re-seal entire faces/shave away certain parts
-Had the rims of the gloves protecting their hair too far down their foreheads, so ended up with lines of built-up sealant a few mm away from their hairlines. Looks really bad, had to redo entire faces because of this
-For some reason even though I'm 100% capable of making clean straight lines I just get...I dunno, lazy? And go too dark too fast. So I started with the Clawdeen, realized what I was doing, and tried to avoid it later on. I think maybe I just tell myself I can get away with not sharpening my pencils as often as possible, when I clearly can't if I want youtube tutorial level lines of divine thinness and crispness. I also forgot how the texture of their faces would be so I was drawing on them like I would sketch on a piece of paper. Nope, not the way to go.
-I keep drawing the left side of their face (if you're looking head on) slightly higher than the right. I find I have that problem all the time. I have no idea why, but I've been fighting against that tendency. You can still kinda see it even though I've been trying to make little adjustments each layer.
-I was working at night a lot of the time and got really frustrated with the colors and lighting. I have a desk lamp and magnifying lamp light, but even with every light turned on it can't compare to natural light. As a consequence I added way too much red to a lot of their faces, which ended up making some of them look sunburnt. Clawdeen looks like she and I share the same cold, lol. Sigh.
-I found out the hard way how certain brands and colors don't mix well. At all.

The good news? I'm improving, I think. :wonder:

As always, if you veterans out there have any advice, I'm all ears. I'm bad at watching tutorials/reading instructions so if you can correct me exactly where I'm going wrong, or suggest something specific I can try, you will have my undying gratitude.

Here's a general question: How come some parts of the face will take color (any kind) beautifully, and then others it's like trying to shove peas into an angry baby's mouth? Is it possibly due to the quality of my pastels? Cause even my stupid expensive Unison pastels don't take sometimes and it's really frustrating. I do all 3 layers of priming, with 24 hour waits between each. Still, pain in the behind. Any advice?

Last but not least, HAAAAUULL!! I don't know what I was thinking but I'm glad I was thinking it, because I received this massive package of dolls today and it's just been lying on my floor for hours. And yes, I will be posting a lot of these for trade/sale! Of course I always prefer to trade, but money is cool too, and at the moment I really need some Ghoulia's. No head is okay, but gotta have all the other parts. Also maybe an extra Mouscedes. I dunno, I'll find the time to take more pics and throw em up on my sales sometime soon and will see what happens from there.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Thank you guys as always for being so encouraging and helpful. I don't know what I would do without this site.

Cheers, until next time!

I just wanted to say that when I read your description of the bratz shoes I laughed out loud for years

You're right, I guess I felt so intimidated at first I got caught up in doing everything right. I've noticed too that I do much better when I just relax and have fun with it. Thanks for the wisdom, here's to doing what we love!

Sightings / Craigslist!
« on: January 03, 2017, 08:45:30 PM »
I've been seeing some postings around me that may be of interest to people, I buy quite a number of my dolls/furniture off of Craigslist so I wouldn't mind being the middle woman. Or just list these as sightings and maybe people can work it out with the seller for shipping? Either way, not sure how we should go about organizing this, but I guess I'll start with a basic template.

My location: Panorama City, CA
Willing to drive: Pretty much anywhere within LA depending on my schedule
Listings around me (1/23/17):
(Admin Edit - links removed - CV)
If anyone's interested I suppose we could use paypal, and I could pick up the dolls/ship, possibly with a tiny fee for driving? Feel free to throw out suggestions!
