Off Topic / Re: 180 Toys R Us Stores Closing
« on: February 23, 2018, 07:14:35 AM »
We lost ours in the first wave of closing, but man it's painful to see more go.  We're hoping to make that last trip before they close entirely, but I'm starting to think that won't happen.

I bought some tissue paper and blank cards for my Reddit exchanges, along with a Funko pop for one.  I hope to do the rest of my shopping for my three exchanges this weekend, but we'll see how that goes.

My sister and I debated on a Fire Emblem pouch all day, finally gave in and got it.  It's the one with Azura.

Monster Discussion / Re: The demise of Monster High?
« on: February 20, 2018, 01:08:45 PM »
It's been heading that way for a long time, so if Mattel has come out and admitted MH is done, I would not be surprised.   With shelf spaces getting smaller and smaller, and lines becoming few and far between, and this all but saying 2018 is the year of Barbie, it might also become the last year of MH.

Though we've also been assuming "this is the last year/last line of MH" since the reboot, so who can say? ^^;

Not unless Mattel didn't know that he had not given the rights to sell the comic, especially if SIRIUS did it behind his back as you say.

That's the opinion I'm getting from you.  You seem to not buy the coincidence, nor do you want to listen to anyone who thinks it's coincidental.  It seems a stretch for you to think that anyone else could have come p with ____ in high school and call it ____ High.  This is just going around in circles at this point.

Someone found these in Turkey of all places.

I saw these last night, thought they were fakies for a moment.  Poppy with long hair really threw me for a loop.  The Apple is kind of cute, so is the Blondie.

If the comic company sold his ideas, that's on him and the comic company.  That's not on Mattel.  I also never said I doubted that they contacted him.  I don't think any of us have.  I have wondered, though, if he really feels they stole from him, why has there been no lawsuit?  You see them enough that it wouldn't be a big shocker.

As I said before, my sister has looked up Monster High from the start, never came across it.  I've been a part of communities for years, first helping her with her collection, then working on my own.  No one has ever mentioned this obscure comic.

Nothing is ever really original anymore.  I do still feel it's coincidental.  Even if it lines up perfectly for you, well, that's how you see it.  I can't change your mind, clearly, and I'm not here to try.  Just to put in my own two cents on the matter, as that's what I'm sure you wanted us to do.

I completely forgot Kjersti, and I'll give you Bloodgood as well since I tend to forget she's the daughter of the Headless Horseman, though I often see a lot of OCs with the missing headed dullahans/replacement pumpkins.  We never got a true Harpy, the CAM is a great base.  Quill never really came to be and I think she was the closest.  But I see a few Sassy Squatches, for example.  Heck, I recently came across the son of John Kramer and the daughter of John Kramer, both designed around Billy the puppet, different creators.

Anyway, back on topic, like I said, you really seem to have to dig for this.  It's possible they overlooked it or never even found it.  How easy was it to find in the late 90s/early 00s?  You said yourself it developed a niche following, but never exploded in popularity.  And it's very likely Adam Bordner was not even the first person to come up with such an idea.

As for the names, Monster High School and Monster High.  About as generic as you can get.  If it was something he had come up with, like Cryptington School For Monsters, and you walk into a store, and boom, Mattel has made Kryptington Kidz or something, then you've got an argument.

Removed some of my sister's Surprizamals that she pulled.

I have to agree that it's purely coincidence.  It seems to find this Monster High, you really have to dig.  My sister has been following Mattel's Monster High since the beginning, I can't even remember how exactly she found out about it, but she was often searching it online for games to play or doll release information.  When I showed her this, she said she had never come across it in many Google searches.

Schools are a really common setting.  Taking ideas people know and putting them in schools are a great way to get kids interested.  "Hey, it's like my school, but for ______!"  As for the monsters themselves, the biggest three are Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and Dracula. They'd likely become the main characters.

Frankie is a unisex name, and very easy to pair with Stein to make you realize who her parents are.   She'd also be the easiest to fill the trope of the outsider main character who introduces us to the setting as she herself learns, as, even though she's a teenager, she's really only been made a few days ago.  Cleo is a shortened form of Cleopatra, and her being a mummy, she's bound to have Egyptian motifs.

Even within fandoms, ideas overlap.  Just look up Monster High OCs.  There are many characters who get used a lot, especially ones that Mattel never made, like Sasquatch, trolls, succubi/incubi, dullahans, harpies, even slasher villains.

Are they using only characters that have appeared in the series so far? Since I don't follow G2, I can't tell but I would've loved to see Honey and Elissabat for the tea party. Maybe even Kiyomi showing them some traditional Japanese tea ceremony tricks!

So far, yes, with the exception of I think Clawd and Howleen.  Though some who appeared in Ghoul Squad also haven't gotten dolls (Catty and Operetta.)

Even so, still a headscratcher of a choice.  Rochelle would have been a good choice for either, so would Toralei, both of whom have shown up in G2 dolls.

I absolutely love the build of the boy dolls the most.  At first, I didn't notice much of a difference until I held DTFA Deuce and Scaris Deuce.  It looks so much better.  The original ones always looked like their chests were compressed or something.

I missed a lot of announcements last night, will post them later if anyone wants them.  I hate that about the Mystery Minis, I have a great love for Filburt.  I'm hoping his rarity isn't super high.

Finally getting around to the others here.  ^^;

Does anyone here play Pokemon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon?  The guy at Gamestop gave me a paper with a code on it for either Palkia or Dialga depending on the game you have, only one code can be used per game.  I don't have any of those games, and I don't want it to go to waste.

I play Sun and Moon, but I thought the events were over for those games because of the release of USUM? So this is a curious situation. I am interested though! :biggrin:
Sent you a PM about it. :)

Added some of my sister's in box dolls.  She has more to go through, and also has every Venus released right now, isn't sure if she wants to keep them or not, so if you're interested in her, keep an eye out.

Pics of the newer stuff are starting to trickle out.  My sister is super hyped for Davos, but we're both disappointed in the Daenerys in the Dragonstone throne.  It looks so lackluster, almost like she's sitting in front of a chunk of wood wall.
