Customs / Natural fibers question
« on: June 23, 2018, 01:44:55 AM »
Me again, with yet another hair question! I think I mentioned it before but I highly prefer natural fibers over synthetic and so I ordered some pastel colours of Tussah silk. I also have some romie rovings and superfine Merino. Thing is, I've only seen tutorials on wigs made with brushed yarn or various synthetic fibers and I'm wondering how I can treat these fibers, what kind of heat they withstand, etc. So far I've made a test weft of each to see what I can expect to work with and silk is super finicky and sheds like a (censoring myself here but there was fluffy bits everywhere). Romie is strangely very...plastic-y? but it'll work perfectly for making long hair I think. Anyway, my question is: does anyone have experience with these fibers and can I follow any wig tutorial with these (ex. could I make a Mozekyto brushed yarn wig but replace the brushed yarn with silk) or do I need to find specific resources to work with natural fibers?

Clawdeen's Closet / Designing your own fabric print?
« on: June 13, 2018, 09:23:11 PM »
Hey guys!
So I'm trying to make an outfit with a very specific theme and I can't find any print that would fit so I thought I'd design it myself. Problem is, Spoonflower is super expensive when you're Canadian and just need a little bit of fabric with a print (I definitely don't need a whole yard). I'm making a pair of knee high socks, a graphic t-shirt and probably an oversized hoodie - I'm going to make the design for the shirt front and I need two different but matching prints for the socks and hoodie. Someone mentioned on my blog that there are printable fabric sheets and that @Kara Zor-El might know something about it? In any case, if anyone has tips and/or experience with making your own fabric prints/designs, I'd love to hear them!

Customs / Cyber dreadlocks?
« on: June 05, 2018, 09:31:57 PM »
Hey guys!
I've been sick a lot lately so I haven't been super active but I'm very slowly working on a cybergoth custom and right now I'm stuck on the wig. I want to make the traditional pigtails look and I found a variety of ribbons and threads to use. My current issue is with the dreadlocks. I have a ton of black brushed acrylic yarn that I put aside for later use and I thought I could use it but Corsetkitten's method (water + soap + rolling) is not working. I tried doing something similar but using a bit of white glue in the water, basically making a very liquid mod podge kind of thing and not only does it take forever to make but it also makes the dreadlocks pretty stiff. They're still bendable and the glue doesn't show or anything but it's not exactly what I'm trying to do. So does anyone have suggestions for either a different method for dreadlocks or maybe something else I could do to achieve the cybergoth pigtails look on this wig?

Monster Discussion / Body change between G1 and G2?
« on: April 22, 2018, 05:42:21 PM »
I only have 2 dolls that are post-reboot, all of the others I have are pre-reboot and I just realized something. One of those dolls is Gooliope and she didn't change at all from her Freak du Chic release from what I can see but Moanica has a completely different body than the other girls. The back curve, the thickness of the's pretty much a EAH body at this point? Since I don't have any other standard-sized G2 dolls to compare I don't know if the other girls have been given that same new body or if it's just a Moanica thing but I am so disappointed - a lot of the bracelets/wrist cuffs from the G1 girls don't fit her: I tried to put Astranova's cuffs on her and it wouldn't go, there was no way to put back her hands with the cuffs on. I know the dolls now have certain molded features like Clawdeen's fur, Cleo's bandages or Venus's vines but have the rest of their body really changed that much (especially the waist size/back curve)?

Off Topic / Hatchimals?
« on: March 06, 2018, 05:38:51 PM »
I've heard about them for a while but I hadn't gotten any until my mother got me a Colleggtible earlier today and they're so adorable! Does anyone collect them? I'm trying to find the name of the one I got, who's a small purple fox with glittery wings from Season 2 - I can find the Season 1 collection PDF but not Season 2 so I don't know what are the characters and if my little fox is common? The only thing I know is that the golden ones are super rare but otherwise I know nothing!

Customs / First reroot advice?
« on: February 16, 2018, 01:08:44 PM »
Alright so I decided to do a needle and thread reroot with brushed acrylic yarn and it's the first time I'm doing this so I need an opinion. I feel like I'm putting too much hair on her but I can't visualize what it'll look like when I'm done so maybe it's the right amount of hair and it'll be alright once I style it but right now I'm looking at my work like "Maybe this is too fluffy..."

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Does it look alright? Should I remove some plugs? Should I finish the reroot and then adjust? I'm so confused!

Monster Discussion / Your Monster High OCs
« on: February 14, 2018, 01:25:23 PM »
Do you guys have Monster High OCs? Who are they? Do you have them in doll form/planning to make them? I've always loved making OCs for all sorts of universes and of course, Monster High is no exception. I currently have 5 OCs, all with planned bodies but none entirely finished yet.

The first is Margot, future body is FdC Honey Swamp, she's a marionette and daughter of Slappy the Dummy from Goosebumps but she's actually nice unlike her dad and loves baking.

The second is Sybil Gray, she's sort of half-human because she's the daughter of Dorian Gray and she's a pretentious loner who loves painting but she only paints self-portraits. She's not really friends with anyone but she's been caught speaking to Jackson a few times because she feels like he understands her situation.

Third one is Kadri Ankara, a Turkish Angora Werecat girl who's a real fashionista, made with a Catrine DeMew. She wears a hijab and clothing inspired by Islamic fashion as well as lots of jewellery and accessories. I imagine she might be friends with the fashionable ghouls like Clawdeen but being a Werecat, she'd probably be more interested in making friends with Purrsephone and Meowlody, because they're more discreet than Toralei but they still have a killer style.

Fourth is Ambrosia Shufflington, made with a FdC Twyla whose arms aren't hers because her original ones are broken; Ambrosia was created by Dr. Septimus Pretorius from Bride of Frankenstein but she wasn't fully conscious so he threw her out as a failed experiment, she was then adopted by a zombie engineer who gave her new arms and finished bringing her to life.

The last but not the least is Nephthys Riddle, daughter of the Egyptian Sphinx, and in her backstory she was a childhood friend of Cleo before the De Nile got trapped in the tomb, I'm going to make her from a Toralei.

What about yours?

Off Topic / Dealing with loneliness
« on: February 11, 2018, 11:13:33 PM »
So...I have a lot of medical and psychological conditions. I'm autistic with severe anxiety, depression, OCD, issues with food (it's both an eating disorder and a hypersensitivity to tastes and textures), I have chronic migraines, a heart condition, fibromyalgia, a severe case of IBS-D, etc, etc. I'm disabled by doctor and government standards: I can't go out by myself, I can't walk for long distances and sometimes need a wheelchair, I can't even feed myself properly. I've been seeing a doctor every few months, a psychiatrist every three months or so and I have a psychologist I see every week as well as a social worker, plus specialists related to my various issues. I have appointments constantly. My conditions causes me a lot of stress and, ultimately, sadness and frustration because I can't be like everyone. I've also learned recently that my emotional development is that of a 2/3-years-old at best, which explains why negative emotions make me lose control entirely (I cry, I can't make complete sentences, I basically throw tantrums, etc). Because of all this, I can't hang out in public, like in cafés or bars or whatever. There's too many people, too much noise, too many variables that I don't know about in advance, it's overwhelming. My only few friends are online and lately...well, no one is speaking to me. I don't know if they just got tired of me, of my constant sadness, but I've been feeling very lonely and I don't know how to deal with it. I'm not happy and I don't know how people succeed in being happy despite chronic and mental illnesses because I can't do it. It's very frustrating and I just wish I could do one thing normally, just one. Because right now I cannot eat normally, I cannot sleep normally, I cannot even shower normally (I have some sort of deep-seated fear of the bathroom for one reason or another and my mother has to accompany me through every step of the shower or else I sit in the tub and cry and scream like a toddler left by themselves, it's humiliating...). I try to focus on the little things that make me happy like Monster High but with the reboot, it's not working that well anymore. Playing with my dolls is still fun but I can't work on them as much as I'd like because I often have pain flares or a panic attack or some other thing and then I have to stay in bed, medicated, until it passes. I'm not really expecting any sort of miracle solution by posting here, I guess I just needed to vent...

Clawdeen's Closet / Outfits from the Void
« on: February 04, 2018, 06:27:59 PM »
I kept hesitating because I'm a perfectionist and also very insecure about my work but I also know I have talent's my sewing adventures!

Here's my first complete outfit for FdC Gooliope Jellington. Patterns for the underwear is from DGRequiem, skirt is patternless (I just cut a huge rectangle and then sewn it onto Goop and added a waistband), stockings were made by tracing Goop's legs and the jacket is from a pattern from Fable-ous Finds! Pictures under a spoiler because there's a few of them (also excuse the cat hair, I have three of them and they're very cuddly/feat. my mother's WIP painting). Cross-posted on my MH Tumblr!

Monster Discussion / Grief over the end of G1?
« on: February 01, 2018, 06:20:31 PM »
I've tried getting into the reboot and I just...can't. I hate it. I'm not saying it's bad or anything and I'm glad there are people who like it but personally, I cannot stand the new webisodes and movies. The characters have very two-dimensional personalities: where is our Cleo de Nile, the one who could be an absolute pest but also a real sweetheart with her friends? Instead I feel like they made "good" characters and "bad" characters, they changed everyone's backstory, the new dolls look like they're barely 12 rather than 14+, their outfits are far from fierce, the boys have all but disappeared into the background (why is Cleo not with Deuce?
where is Clawd? Gil?), the whole thing gives me the impression that Mattel changed their demographic to kids rather than preteens and teens. And I'm really sad. I love those dolls and I love the lore of Monster High and the movies made me laugh and smile and now I feel like it's over. Is anyone else grieving the loss of G1 in favour of this reboot?

Off Topic / Super Monsters
« on: February 01, 2018, 01:50:41 AM »
Has anyone heard of/started watching Super Monsters? It's an American-Canadian series for kids about preschool-aged monsters, pretty much like Monster High but in preschool. Seems like there's a dash of Ever After High too, because there's a small blue cat called Henri in Boots? I'm tempted to watch it because it looks really cute and I was wondering if anyone has seen it yet since it's relatively new (October 2017).

Customs / Treesa Thornwillow?
« on: January 26, 2018, 01:41:51 PM »
Has anyone made or seen a customized Treesa? I haven't bought her because she looks like a pain to customize in any way and since her size isn't standard, sewing clothes for her would also be difficult. I do have a project that might work for her but I haven't found anyone who has customized her and I'd need to see the whole mechanism of the nude doll before deciding if I can use her for my project. For example, I know her branches aren't removeable and the package says that she "grows" (is it her middle that extends?) so I don't really know. My project isn't for the faint of hearts so I won't describe it but I'll just say that it's from the Hannibal TV series. If anyone has a Treesa and would be willing to take detailed pictures, or maybe if anyone has a link to a video that shows her properly?

Monster Discussion / Headscarf in the Monster High universe?
« on: January 17, 2018, 10:47:27 PM »
I don't want to start any sort of debate or controversy and I know religion is a very sensitive subject and I also know we're supposed to avoid it as per the rules so if this goes wrong, I'm fully aware this thread will disappear. It's just that I'm making an OC who is going to wear a headscarf because she comes from a mostly Muslim country and it fits with her character and everything (also headscarves are beautiful).

Thing is, I don't particularly like the idea of weaving religion into this universe and I'm looking for a different reason she might want to wear a head covering. The only reasons I've encountered were religious (not only Muslim of course, a lot of religions have or had some sort of head coverings) and since there aren't any monsters wearing some sort of symbol like this, I'm struggling to find a way to make this believable (which ultimately doesn't matter because she's my OC and not an actual character but I'm a perfectionist x-x).

I mean, the monsters from other countries wear traditional fashion (Jinafire's fashion is very Chinese-inspired, Skelita wears a lot of Mexican clothing, Batsy's style is reminiscent of Costa Rica, Lorna is obviously Scottish, etc), but none of them has religious symbols I think, except maybe Skelita's shrines to her ancestors but I'm not sure if that enters in the realm of tradition or religion. For a little more information, she's a Turkish werecat girl from "Istanboo", she's a fashionata and she's very proud of her culture (think Jinafire and Skelita in Scaris, talking about their country and family and traditions, etc), I just don't know how to explain her headscarf without getting religious?

Clawdeen's Closet / Favourite MH outfits?
« on: January 14, 2018, 09:47:16 AM »
Even though I sew my own clothes (thread coming soon), I love the official Monster High outfits even though the quality is sometimes...questionable and the shoes need some jazzing up. Since I often choose which doll I want based on the outfit they come with, I was wondering what's everyone's favourite official outfits?

Mine would be Gala Ghoulfriends Elle Eedee, Dawn of the Dance Clawdeen Wolf, Freak Du Chic Twyla, Fusion-Inspired Ghouls Ghoulia Yelps, Hauntlywood Operetta, Ghouls Rule Draculaura, Gloom and Bloom Catrine DeMew, I Love Shoes Draculaura, Zomby Gaga, Monster Exchange Lagoona Blue, Scaris: City of Frights Ghoulia Yelps, Nautical Ghouls Dayna Treasura Jones, Wave 4 Rochelle Goyle, Swim Class Lagoona Blue & Swim Class Rochelle Goyle! That was longer than I thought it'd be  And you can see which dolls' styles come back the most (Ghoulia, Draculaura, Lagoona and Rochelle mostly)!

Trader Support / Mattel US and Mattel Canada issues
« on: January 12, 2018, 10:40:28 AM »
My Freak du Chic Twyla came with awful elbow joints, one of them was molded wrong, plain and simple, and the peg on the other one is crooked, making her look incredibly awkward because her arms sit at an angle sort of...back from their original position. I live in Canada and contacted Mattel, who (finally) answered that they have no replacement parts, nor a replacement doll to send. Because I'm curious, I went on the US part store instead of choosing Canada and lo and behold, there's a pair of replacement arms for Freak du Chic Twyla. Problem is, I can't buy it from Canada and apparently either Mattel Canada doesn't have access to those parts, either they just don't care. Any idea what I can do? I even looked on Ebay but haven't seen a single Twyla arm and I'm not sure I want to buy another Twyla (who knows if her arms will even be right!).

Buy/Sell/Trades / VoidChilde's Wanted
« on: January 06, 2018, 11:13:35 PM »
First things first: I'm in Canada, I'm willing to buy anywhere given that I have the budget for it (sometimes I won't but if you're willing to wait a bit, I always make room for dolls and doll stuff) and I do not care about boxes at all. I prefer having the original clothes and shoes but I can do without accessories (though some are really cool so it depends) and stands, since I redress and keep my dolls in my bed. I also don't particularly care about light stains or messy hair since most if not all of my dolls are going to be customized in some way. Also if you sell your own creations for clothes and accessories and even doll-sized objects, feel free to message me, I want to build a huge wardrobe/playground for my dolls! Without further ado, here's the list!

EAH clothes
I don't really want the dolls but I absolutely love the clothes so if you happen to have a doll whose clothes you're willing to part with, here's the ones I'm looking for. Note that I'd like the shoes as well but in most cases, accessories are not necessary (unless mentioned):

I also take any accessories like teacups, cakes, books, etc, that usually come with dolls but that are not necessarily attached to them (ex. EAH Hat-Tastic teacups and teapots or MH Art Class accessories)

Customs / Changing a doll's skintone
« on: January 04, 2018, 06:26:57 PM »
I've read countless of things about changing a doll's skintone and I know dyeing has mixed results since MH dolls are made of various plastics, and so far I haven't found a single alternative (paints don't seem to work?) except maybe pastels from what I read, although I doubt the soft pigment could drastically change the skin colour. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas, anything that might work, to turn a green-ish doll into a more flesh coloured one. I have a Honey Swamp who's going to serve as a base for an OC, I will be sanding down her skin details, repainting and making a wig, etc, etc. But my problem is that my OC does not have green skin and I'm not quite sure what to do. It has to be this doll in particular, because it's the Freak du Chic one and her joints work perfectly for what I want, but I want to know if I have to tweak my OC or if there is any option for me at this point?

Introductions! / Hello from a shy fae
« on: January 03, 2018, 07:43:06 AM »
Hi everyone!

I'm Eli/Elias, I'm 26 and I'm from Quebec, Canada. I just received my first MH dolls from Christmas after coveting them for years and now I've started my collection proper. I have Lorna McNessie, Kjersti Trollson and the Freak du Chic Gooliope Jellington, Twyla and Honey Swamp! I love the series and the movies, I sew my own clothes for them (just finished a series of white cotton pyjama sets for the girls to have a slumber party) and I'm thinking about jumping into repainting and rerooting because I really love customization! I bring my dolls a lot of places with me and I have the encyclopedia of MH dolls, I have several favourite characters (Catrine DeMew, Kiyomi Haunterly, Sirena Von Boo, River Styxx, etc) and I'm...very passionate about Monster High actually  Also I never know when to share it but I feel it's important so I'm autistic and not very good at social interaction so I'm very shy, but I'm glad to have found somewhere to talk about one of my special interests!
