So some of y'all are gaming experts in here? Like Nostalgic ones? i have questions regarding Nintendo's handheld systems and don't know where else to turn to ask...
I'm looking into buying a Nintendo Gameboy Advance and a Nintendo DS

Whats the difference between a Nintendo DS and a Nintendo 3DS?? Are either of them backwards compatible?

Do gameboy Advances play the old school original Gameboy games? (the grey cartridges)? Does the DS play them?

TIA!!!

My sister and I both own a 3DS, well mine is a New Nintendo 3DS XL to be more specific.  You can play DS games on the 3DS, but not 3DS on DS since the 3DS is newer and has the requirements for the 3D function, which I personally never use.  The difference between the New 3DS and just 3DS are few, it has an extra control stick and can read amiibos.  I also believe their chargers are different.

The original DS, which we also have one of around here, my mom tends to use it, has a specific port just for Gameboy Advance games.  Gameboy games won't fit.  Let me get a few pictures.

Keep in mind I just took these really quick, and the DS has not been charged so I could not  switch it on.  ^^;

Here's the DS and my New 3DS XL's backs.  The DS has the two ports, for DS games and for Gameboy Advance games.  The DS just has the 3DS space on the bottom.

The Gameboy game won't go in.  It goes this far and won't lock, so you can't play it.

Gameboy Advance goes in and clicks into place, so you can play those.

And here's them open.  Different button placement and the extra control sticks on the 3DS XL.  The little one above the X/Y/A/B buttons is specific to the New 3DS.

You're welcome! :)  I don't have one, so I know nothing about them, but you can always get a 2DS, they're basically a 3DS with no 3D, so you can play 3DS and DS games, and have access to the eShop.  But they're designed so that they're always 'open', which I'd be nervous to carry around myself for fear of breaking it!  I think they're about $100, but a good used DS should be much cheaper.

Other than portability and legality. I have a RetroFreak, it plays everything.

https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Gadget-Retro-Freak-Controller-Adapter/dp/B00ZZ70KMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1504749608&sr=8-1&keywords=retro+freak

I've been trying to find one FOR MONTHS. But everyone is always out of stock! Thank you for this link. They don't ship to Australia, but I can maybe use a post forwarder... hmmmmm...

Oh wow! That system is awesome! Do you just use the original controllers with it, or does it have its own?

I already own a bunch of the older systems, but it would be cool to have one console for everything.

Hilariously, I have folks in Texas as well. <_<;

AusPost does a freight forwarding service that actually provides fairly cheap shipping since they send parcels in bulk all at once, then divide them up when they arrive. But thank you for the offer! ^^

You can use your own controllers! Coolest part though is say you have a game you love but the cartridge isn't in the best shape. You can rip the game to the memory card in the machine.
