First time WIP Finished re-root [pics added]
« on: May 15, 2017, 05:02:25 PM »
This is quite the learning process xD since my previous experience was ONLY ponies. :p
So much hair.... SOO MUCH HAIR! I planned to cut most of the blue off, but Idk, I'm kinda digging this bohemian/modern Rapunzel cat look lol. I ran out of dyed stuff, and since I had no idea how to even replicate it, I filled in with white, so shes got chunks of white stripes which I dont think look TOO horrible? I will be able to work them in better once I style her hair.

This is more true to color, the next pic got kinda washed out

LOOOOONG

OK! Since I got all the answers I needed (so far) from all you awesome people, I thought I would transform this thread into a First time Customs WIP thread, where I can post all my in progress pics. :)

Hi True,
Here's a link to a recent thread that has a LOT of hair info! The person sells hair:
http://mharena.com/index.php/topic,14231.0.html

Also, under Customs, there's a sticky thread that has a bunch of cool tutorials and resources.

How exciting! Do you know what your first one will be?

As DogMom mentioned, we have a Customization Tutorials, Resources, and FAQs sticky that I highly recommend checking out.  It has the answers to all of your questions and more, and is a boon to new customizers. :)

ok so i looked up a ton of tutorials and actually they helped with some things that I didnt even know i would need. Like using liquid fusion to fix the rip in the top of her head.

But i'm still unsure what type of glue is best for sealing in the hair? I have always used tacky glue for ponys, but they use less hair and im just not sure? is this still a good type of glue to use for mh??

Tacky glue works. Really, any craft or fabric glue that isn't water soluble will be ok (no PVA/Elmer's). I've even seen people use Liquid Fusion, but I wouldn't because it's an expensive glue compared to craft/Tacky glue...

I like Fabri-tac as it's fully waterproof when dry, Tacky Glue leaks through hair plugs sometimes for me.

Same here.  I prefer Fabri-Tac, but I have used Tacky Glue in the past.

ooh Ill look into the fabri-tac!
The one reason I asked is because I want to avoid the glue-head like you get in factory dolls xD

Iv never had that problem using tacky glue in ponies, but again they dont have as much hair, and I dont think people are as likely to restyle custom ponies hair down the line. :p

OK so iv started putting some WIP pics up in the main thread :)

Added some updated pics to the main post. :)

Finished the re-root, booy-O that took some time haha.
I think I had about two hanks of the dyed stuff (it was all combined and in a plastic bag when i bought it)
Since that ran out, I filled in with some virgin snow.

Things I learned...
-Pony hair is HEAVY
-I need to shorten my rooting needle next time (too much hair inside the head)
-PLAN MY HAIR PARTS! I did one side, but not the other side, so the original style I had in mind Is NOT possible without revealing bald spots, Oh well, I learned, and I'm ok with her side part style as a first attempt.

For the most part I followed the original hair root, except not parting down the middle, and adding a widows peak. I noticed this left quite a bit of gaps that I didnt think would be covered so I filled in with more hair. I think it will be ok.
