Ebay rant
« on: February 19, 2017, 06:12:33 PM »
So I was given some autographed baseballs to sell on ebay by someone I know who does not use ebay (they are very elderly.)

I listed the balls and then get a message from someone telling me the autographs are fake. I changed my listing and added a notice that the autograph may not be authentic but is still a nice collectible. I also drastically lowered the price.

I've heard horror stories from high end purse sellers on ebay about ruthless people who report them or convince them their item is fake for their own benefit (less competition or to buy the item to resell.) I don't know if this other ebayer is honest or just trying to scam me!

They aren't my baseballs and I don't want to invest money in taking them to an appraiser. The person who gave me the balls firmly believes they are real, bought them about 20 years ago from a physical sports memorabilia store in New York City, and paid full price. The balls have certificates of authenticity but apparently those can be faked too.

I just don't know what to do at this point. I'm worried I will hurt my ebay account. I have 100% positive feedback and I don't want to lose my account or selling privileges!

I would put a little effort into finding someone to appraise them properly. Could it be so much that it'd mitigate your profit if they are real?

Also maybe search the person's username who 'warned' you, maybe something comes up on collector sites.

Check the feedback on the person who contacted you, including the specific comments, to find out if they've had issues with others.

It also couldn't hurt to reach out to ebay with your situation...that way it's on record that you tried to do the right thing, and if this person does prove to be shady you'll have some documentation to help protect yourself.

I have no clue on authenticating sports memorabilia or signatures, but I wonder if a first step could be to google the player's signature? If an online version is similar maybe it'd be worth it to get the sig recertified as you could charge more. Or maybe there's a book or online resourse you can get to check the signatures against?

Or, is the original store still in business? If yes, maybe either they can do something,  or else maybe they'd be interested in buying the pieces for resale?

Good luck! Keep us posted!

I looked into it more last night. My bf helped me with some rigorous googling and we are 99% sure they are fake. The auctions have been removed!

Now I just don't know what to tell the guy who gave me the balls. I don't think he would be happy knowing he was fooled and that he payed a lot of money for nothing.

Awww, too bad for the owner. That sucks. What was it about the balls that made you & BF decide they were fake?

We researched into the name of the company that was listed on the COA and they were part of a scam in the 90's in NYC and New Jersey selling fake autographs. And guess what, he bought the balls in NYC in the 90's!

He has a framed Marilyn Monroe autograph too that is his pride and joy. I wonder if that is fake! I'm not going to say anything though, I'd rather see him leave this world thinking it was real.

And I learned a lesson, just say no next time someone asks me to list their stuff on ebay.
