Can you do this? What'll it cost?
« on: July 30, 2013, 12:24:35 PM »
I want to give my gorgon CAM a specific hairdo. It's been rattling around in my brain for some time so now I want to just see what it'll run me if I comission someone to do it. Also does anyone think they can pull it off.
I want to give her a cute boyish short haircut that does a bit of a fauxhawk.
Halle Berry is my favorite example of the hairstyle.

So I'm thinking would flocking be needed? Would mohair be the best choice in material?
I'd like the color to be peach and pink, with pink on top. Like sunset colors.

Is this a weird impossible request? Maybe I should do a digital mockup or something.

That would look smoking hot on the gorgon.
I don't think I could pull it off.

I would think brushed yarn could do something close...

Ok I checked out silkspindle/silkspun's tutorial on brushed yarn hairing for ponies. It seems simple enough. I've just never rehaired anything and my sister is afraid to try, she doesn't want to ruin my doll. I've been seeing the mummy/gorgon packs a lot lately so maybe i'll just buy another for just in case..
Really hoping to get someone else to do this lol

I would definitely like to try it but I haven't rerooted a doll with hair that short before! I'd be worried about the scalp showing, so she'd need pretty dense rooting all over to keep that from happening too badly... I've done short spiky styles on ponies before, though!

If you really want me to, I'd like to try something similar as a test run on another doll first instead, just to see if it would actually work and how it would look (then I'd keep or sell that test doll or something). Based off of that, I could give you a commission quote, if you'd like. I could estimate it being around $80, though.

Another thing you could do (which would probably be cheaper than a reroot commission from me since this style would be SO work-intensive, lol), is to seek out someone that makes fur wigs for BJDs... You can get them really short, like this, and with a little haircut and some styling, it could probably match that Halle Berry ref pretty well!

Hmm ok thick rooting. I definitely encourage you to test it out if you'd like. Definitely an expensive reroot service so I'd have to think on that for a bit. Maybe if I can get some things sold... I hadn't considered wigs, it didn't really occur to me that short hairstyle wigs were out there  ^^; I can only imagine BJD quality wigs to be pricey as well.
I do have a crappy CAM wig I was going to give to my sister to practice rerooting on so maybe I could experiment as well.
Thanks so much for the response and advice!

There are a few etsy shops that do fur wigs that wont break the bank, even one of two on ebay.

I'm finishing up a girl today with a fur wig and will post pics later you can check out.  I didn't cut it, but you can see thickness and quality pretty clearly.

I got mine off etsy, it took a little longer than I hoped but they turned out really nice.

Ok, I've got something that's either an awesome idea, or a terrible one. Instead of rerooting, you could try a very strong quick hold glue (like E6000 quick hold) and gluing the yarn ends to it, then brush it with the wire brush. I tried this earlier on a scrap Abbey leg:

Except I just stuck some fluff on not so carefully. Yes, that's with brushing the fiber. E6000 is stupid strong :whoa: If you like I can test my idea tonight.

I made a wig that looks like a mullet for one of my CAM Bee's out of faux fur so you can def cut them down pretty short with them still looking decent.

I was looking at the brushed yarn wig tutorial and thought that looked like a safe first start. And then maybe from there I can decide on re-root or gluing to the head like you suggested Angelkitty. Or just keeping her in a wig. *shrugs* Guess it's time to get experimental.
I super appreciate all the suggestions and advice guys!
